French Ministry of Education, Alberta Education, and CAIS accredited French bilingual school of about 450 students total, is seeking a full-time School Counsellor, starting in November 2024. Founded in 1966, Lycée international de Calgary (formerly Lycée Louis Pasteur) is a non-denominational independent French international school providing a challenging and stimulating bilingual education within a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment. We are Calgary’s premier French School, the only pre-K to Grade 12 school in Western Canada, both accredited by the French Ministry of Education and Alberta Education. As a member of the AEFE, we are part of a network of about 560 schools in 140 countries.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Head of School (HoS), the School Counsellor is a member of the administrative team who works in all levels of the School with a variety of counselling issues. The School Counsellor is responsible for developing and implementing a counselling program that supports students aged 3-18 in their emotional, social, and academic development and well-being. The School Counsellor collaborates with division heads, school staff and parents to help students succeed in all aspects of their lives, and liaises with other professionals, agencies or outside organizations as necessary. The School Counsellor also provides occasional support to Lycée employees, when needed. They have a lead role in translating the school vision and philosophy into a proactive and fully integrated counselling strategy in order to fulfill the mission and strategic plan of Lycée international de Calgary. There are no direct reports to this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

JOB DUTIES

The duties of the School Counsellor include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop a clear understanding of Lycée international de Calgary mission and strategic plan while supporting the school and its leadership
  • Collaborate with staff to determine how best to meet individual students' needs
  • Coordinate and facilitate individual or group meetings for students for improving social skills or addressing behavioural challenges
  • Facilitate small support groups as needed
  • Consult, liaise, collaborate with parents/caregivers, teachers, staff and other community professionals, providing resources and support when required
  • Adhere to professional and ethical standards of school counselling
  • Ensure a positive and engaging experience for students, staff and families

CRISIS MANAGEMENT

  • Respond effectively to crises affecting students and employees
  • Provide mental health and behavioural counselling to students and employees in crises
  • Recognize and appropriately take care of individual students' socio-emotional challenges

TRAINING

  • Plan and conduct training for staff as needed
  • Work with school faculty and staff to develop plans for ensuring the well-being of individual students and of the student population as a whole
  • Assist parents, teachers, tutors and colleagues in understanding and responding to developmental levels of students, and their needs or concerns
  • Demonstrate continual professional development through workshops & conferences

REPORTING

  • Submit referrals to outside agencies and mental health professionals as necessary to ensure students' well-being
  • Complete regular reports for services provided, such as session notes and incident reports
  • Maintain up-to date and accurate confidential records


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master's degree in Counselling, Social work or Psychology, or certified Alberta Teacher with additional training and experience in school counselling
  • 3+ years of experience working as a counsellor with children and youth - or have worked closely with school aged children for at least one year.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Currently registered with an appropriate regulatory body
  • Proficiency with software including Databases, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite 
  • Suicide Risk Assessment training or completion of certification within first month of employment
  • First aid Training
  • Police Check (with vulnerable sector)
  • Eligible to work in Canada

Preferred

  • Experience working with children ages 3-5 considered an asset
  • PhD in a relevant field (social work, psychology or counselling)
  • Bilingual in French and English
  • Experience working in a bilingual or plurilingual environment
