Job Summary:
The Food Services Manager plays a key role in managing all aspects of food service operations to ensure the efficient, safe, and compassionate preparation and distribution of meals to the homeless community. This position is responsible for overseeing the kitchen team, volunteers, inventory, food safety protocols, and meal planning. The Food Services Manager will work closely with program staff and volunteers to ensure that the kitchen operates effectively and meets the needs of those served. This position also involves oversight of the janitorial, driving, and sandwich-preparation teams.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Meal Planning and Preparation:
• Plan, prepare, and oversee the execution of nutritious, well-balanced meals daily.
• Ensure meal plans are designed with the dietary needs of the community in mind.
• Manage the coordination of special meals for events, holidays, or fundraisers.
Kitchen and Food Operations Management:
• Oversee all kitchen operations including food preparation, serving, and clean-up.
• Supervise kitchen staff and volunteers, providing guidance, training, and support.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment following all health and safety regulations.
• Ensure proper storage, labeling, and disposal of food items.
Inventory and Budget Management:
• Manage food and supply inventory to ensure adequate resources are available for meal service.
• Coordinate food donations and purchasing within budgetary constraints.
• Track inventory usage and work closely with Purchasing to manage expenses efficiently.
• Inventory donations and place regular orders for all other items required.
• Implement and maintain FIFO on all kitchen inventory, especially perishable items.
Volunteer Management:
• Coordinate with the Volunteer Coordinator to determine scheduling and duties for kitchen volunteers.
• Provide training on safe food handling, meal preparation, and cleanliness standards.
• Foster a positive, team-oriented atmosphere in the kitchen and dining area.
Compliance and Safety:
• Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal health and safety standards.
• Implement and oversee food safety protocols, including proper food storage, sanitation practices, and cooking guidelines.
• Regularly inspect kitchen equipment to ensure safety and efficiency.
Staff Management:
• Oversee staffing schedule.
• Facilitate conflict resolution and coordinate with HR on disciplinary action as needed.
• Administer annual performance appraisals.
• Interview and hire staff.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
• High school diploma or equivalent; culinary arts training preferred.
• 3+ years of experience in food service management, preferably in a non-profit or community-based setting.
• Strong knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices; SafeCheck Advanced Food Safety Certificate preferred
• Experience working with volunteers and managing teams.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Compassionate, patient, and able to work in a diverse and fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a passion for serving the homeless community.
• Current first aid training is an asset.
