We are currently seeking qualified part-time Awake Care Counselors for our three Community Group Care Homes. Every night shift will have two staff members working to support and care for up to five youth in the overnight hours of this program. We are hiring overnight staff for two group homes dedicated to youth (13-17 years old) and one group home for youth who are pregnant and/or parenting.

As an Overnight Awake Care Counsellor, you will be available when young people need you the most to ensure they are safe while they sleep and to support them when they need help at night.

The Chimo Youth Retreat Centre is a non-profit organization that has served children, youth and families in the Edmonton region for over 50 years. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about being a team member and understands how their role is essential to the wellbeing of children and youth we serve. Our great staff team provide a broad range of programs and services to youth between the ages of 13-17. As an overnight awake Care Counsellor, you will be part of a team that provides support, education and nurturing in a 24/7 caring, safe, home environment.

More details about what we are looking for:

  • People who thrive in the overnight hours when most people are sleeping. People who are to support people through the nights when they are not able to sleep.
  • Warm and caring individuals who form strong, supportive relationships with youth. If working in the pregnant and parenting home, able to support young moms and their infant/child.
  • People with a passion and deep understanding of the therapeutic impact of working in a group care setting.
  • People with some level of post-secondary education. We most often hire people with diplomas and degrees in Child and Youth Care or Social Work.
  • People who work best in a team environment. We are looking for team members who are excited to make lasting differences in the lives of youth and young families while building a rewarding career in the Child and Youth Care field.
  • Employees with standard employee workplace skills, including good communication, decent writing skills, punctuality in starting shifts on time, able to use technology in the workplace, and a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism.
  • Are physically able to do this work, including overnight shift work, carry over 15 lbs (e.g., install car seats, lift children in the pregnant and parenting home), work indoors and outdoors in all seasons, climb stairs in the group home, complete household management tasks (e.g., cleaning, meal prep, cooking, grocery shopping) and light yard work (i.e. shoveling snow). This is not a desk job.
  • People who understand the concepts that are important to Chimo, including trauma-informed care, strength-based approaches, Indigenous worldviews and ways of knowing, child and youth development, child-parent attachment, therapeutic milieu of group care.

    Hourly Rate: $24.25 - $26.45/hour (includes 6% vacation pay) for level 2 positions.

    What paperwork do we need from you before you start?

    • Level 2 staff will have a diploma or degree in human services.
    • A clear and current, within 6 months, Criminal Records Check.
    • A clear and current Children Services Intervention Record Check.
    • Ideally, all staff will be able to drive the agency’s fleet vehicles, which means you need a valid Class 5 Driver’s License, a clean Drivers’ Abstract and 3-years insurance history.
    • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses minimum)
