Position: Executive Director
Reports To: Governing Board

Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the key leader of the St. Albert & District Further Education Association. They are responsible for advancing the Association's mission and goals under the authority of the Governing Board and in alignment with the Association's Bylaws, Policies, and Procedures. 

The position may be full-time or part-time, and the working location is St. Albert, Alberta.

The full-time salary ranges from $60,000 to $75,000, depending on experience and education credentials.

Position Start Date:  February 1, 2025

Key Responsibilities:

1. Policy and Compliance Management

  • Oversee daily operations and prioritize initiatives in alignment with Association policies.

  • Ensure FOIP (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy) and CASL (Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation) regulations are followed.

  • Approve program-specific policies and procedures while assisting in developing administrative guidelines for Governing Board approval.

  • Support the work of sub-committees appointed by the Governing Board.

2. Strategic Planning and Development

  • Develop and execute both short-term and long-term operational and strategic plans.

  • Lead the business planning efforts, including setting organizational, management, program, and service goals.

  • Engage with community stakeholders to understand and respond to evolving needs.

  • Evaluate alternative plans and make informed decisions to address complex or changing conditions.

 

3. Program Management

  • Supervise critical programs, including the Community Adult Learning Program (CALP), STAR Literacy Volunteer Tutor Program, Newcomer Connections Program, and General Interest/Fundraising Programs.

  • Identify community outreach and education opportunities and initiate relevant programs.

  • Conduct regular community needs assessments and align programs to meet Governing Board priorities within policy guidelines.

  • Promote flexible, responsive program management to handle multiple, changing demands, fostering community input into program planning.

  • Communicate program updates to the community through various outreach efforts.

4. Human Resource Leadership

  • Lead the hiring, training, and performance of all staff and contractors, including program coordinators and volunteer tutors.

  • Implement effective workplace practices, fostering accountability, performance feedback, and open communication.

  • Mentor and develop staff through cross-training, multi-skilling, and succession planning.

5. Operations and Financial Management

  • Maintain a productive and client-focused workplace with minimal bureaucracy and cost-effectiveness.

  • Oversee financial operations, including budget management and securing funds through grant proposals, applications, and fundraising events.

  • Ensure grants are appropriately managed, and reporting requirements are met on time and according to the grant eligibility and submitted application.

  • Ensure adherence to legislative and insurance requirements.

  • Prepare and present an annual report on the Association's progress and achievements.

  • Fundraising 

6. Community Relations and Public Engagement

  • Conduct regular surveys to assess community needs and satisfaction, maintaining high customer service standards.

  • Represent the Association at events and meetings with stakeholders, including government bodies and funding agencies.

  • Manage public communications, including website content, newsletters, and media relations.

  • Respond to inquiries and correspondence, directing them appropriately when necessary.

7. Governing Board and Administrative Liaison

  • Advise and inform the Governing Board on all significant Association matters to support informed policy-making.

  • Provide the Board with well-documented financial and management reports, highlighting variances and updates on significant activities.

  • Facilitate alignment with the Board’s overall policy direction.

  • Coordinate with the board chairperson to set meeting agendas and provide necessary background information for Board and General Meetings.

  • Serve as a non-voting advisor at relevant Board and Committee meetings, supporting the Association’s provincial mandate.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post-secondary education (business, communications, education, human resources, financial management, other)

  • Experience in non-profit management, community adult education, or a related field.

  • Experience with strategic planning, financial management, and community engagement.

  • Strong understanding of FOIP, CASL, and other relevant regulatory frameworks.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing circumstances effectively.
