Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids (BB4CK) has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to join our dedicated team as the Director of Operations. In this full-time, interim role, you'll be stepping into a position where people, action, and trust are at the core of everything we do, helping us build a community where kids have what they need to thrive.

This is a 12-month interim position to cover parental leave, with an anticipated duration beginning in January 2025 and continuing through December 2025. Please note that the end date may be adjusted based on the return date of the employee on leave, and we appreciate candidates' flexibility in accommodating this timeline

For over 30 years, Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids (BB4CK) has been dedicated to ensuring every child in our city has access to the food they need to thrive. Together with our BB4CK community— volunteers, parents, school staff, and donors—we connect kids to nutritious meals through school lunches and summer camps and by supporting families with grocery cards. Position Overview 

The Director of Operations at BB4CK is a key leadership role focused on overseeing People & Culture, Finance, and overall administration. This position strengthens the infrastructure for the entire team's success and supports BB4CK's mission. The Director combines best practices with tailored approaches to meet the organization's unique needs, ensuring strategic alignment with its core values. 

This leader will embody BB4CK's People, Action, and Trust values, fostering collaboration and active engagement with colleagues. They will prioritize solutions that benefit those directly impacted by BB4CK's work. The successful candidate will have proven experience in finance, human resources, and administration within a nonprofit environment. They will be driven to enhance established operations while pursuing innovative strategies to address food insecurity. 

The Director of Operations is responsible for:

Whole Organization 

  • Prioritize your personal and professional health to fulfill your role effectively. 
  • Contribute wholeheartedly to BB4CK's mission and vision. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues, aligning work with BB4CK's values and culture. 
  • Adapt and step into additional responsibilities as needed to support the team. 

Leadership 

  • Contribute to the overall organizational strategy and direction. 
  • Act as a support to the organization overall. 
  • Act as a culture and values ambassador for the organization. 

Director Team 

  • Drive a people-first leadership approach that empowers and engages teams. 
  • Foster open communication and seamless collaboration across departments. 
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen organizational practices and anticipate future needs. 
  • Oversee strategic planning, budget development, and oversight. 
  • Support and mentor Team Leads, promoting their growth and effectiveness. 
  • Partner with the Board and Leadership Team to align on strategic initiatives and risk management. 

Operations 

  • Provide comprehensive oversight of People and culture, administration, and finance functions, ensuring alignment with BB4CK's overarching strategy. 
  • Offer direct support and guidance to the People & Culture and Finance Team Leads, fostering an environment that drives impactful results and positive team dynamics.  
  • Champion the development and refinement of policies that guide  People & Culture and Finance functions, promoting alignment with BB4CK's values and goals.
  • Ensure well documented, transparent, and efficient processes across People & Culture and Finance functions. 
  • Maintain broad financial oversight, with specific focus on staffing expenditures, to uphold BB4CK's financial health and sustainability.
  • Sustain a robust policy framework by proactively updating policies as needed and supporting others in policy development and implementation.
  • Conduct annual reviews and updates of BB4CK's organizational risk matrix to safeguard BB4CK's operations and strategic goals. 
  • Oversee the organizational risk profile, collaborating with team members to assess risks and coordinate mitigation strategies. 
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors, particularly the Governance and People & Culture Committees, to reinforce strong governance practices. 
  • Act as a mentor and coach to colleagues, fostering professional growth, collaboration, and a culture of support within BB4CK. 
  • Lead or contribute to special projects that advance BB4CK's mission matrix
  • Support team members in building and maintaining productive relationships with external partners to strengthen BB4CK's reach and impact. 
  • Ensure seamless cross-departmental collaboration to create an integrated and unified approach to BB4CK's mission. 
  • Represent and promote BB4CK's mission and values as an ambassador within the organization and the broader community.

    Kitchen Team Support

    • All employees of BB4CK are expected to offer their support in our kitchen spaces, as needed, while managing their own capacity and schedules throughout the course of their employment. 

    Additional Knowledge and Skills

    • Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong emotional intelligence, fostering effective collaboration and team dynamics.
    • Experience in nonprofit administration, with an operational understanding of finance and/or people and culture (HR) functions.
    • Familiarity with finance, people and culture, and/or risk management to support cross-functional responsibilities.
    • Demonstrated ability to uphold integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality in all interactions.
    • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

     Education and Experience 
    Operational Leadership Experience:

    • 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in operations or mid-level management, including at least 2-3 years leading teams, setting goals, overseeing performance, and fostering a collaborative, results-oriented work environment.

    Administration and Organizational Systems:

    • 5+ years of direct experience in organizational administration, with a strong track record in process optimization, system implementation, and supporting effective organizational structures.
    • Experience working with people and culture (HR) and finance functions to ensure integrated, cross-departmental operations.

    What We Offer 

    BB4CK offers a competitive total compensation approach to support our people's physical, psychological, cultural, and financial well-being. Base salary is calculated at the 50th percentile of market value, with additional benefits equivalent to over $18,000.
