Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society provides a continuum of care and integrated wrap-around services to women and their children fleeing domestic violence. We facilitate transitional housing and offer longer-term, safe places for women and children to call home while they begin to rebuild their lives. Discovery House is about hope and healing using trauma-informed care practices.

What You’ll Do:

Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement, the Grant Writer will be responsible for researching, preparing, and submitting grant proposals to secure funding for Discovery House. This role involves working closely with the rest of the Community Relations team and other departments to ensure that grant applications align with the organization's strategic goals and meet the requirements of funding agencies. The Grant Writer will also maintain records of grant submissions and manage reporting to funders.

This is a temporary position expected to end in December 2026. Key Responsibilities including but not limited to:

Grant Research and Strategy:

  • Research potential grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, corporations, and other funding sources.
  • Develop and maintain a grant submission calendar, tracking deadlines and submission requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to identify funding needs and align grant opportunities with organizational priorities.

Grant Writing and Submission:

  • Prepare and submit grant applications, including writing narratives, developing budgets, and gathering required documentation.
  • Customize grant proposals to align with the interests and priorities of specific funders.
  • Revise and edit grant proposals to ensure clarity, consistency, and compliance with funder guidelines.

Grant Management and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of grant submissions, awards, and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and submit progress reports to funders as required, ensuring compliance with grant terms and conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Leadership team to ensure that the objectives and outcomes of grant-funded projects are achieved and documented.

Other Duties:

  • Build and maintain relationships with funders, including regular communication and stewardship activities.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop and implement strategies for donor engagement and retention.
  • Stay updated on best practices in grant writing and fund development.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance grant writing skills and knowledge.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience, with at least four years in a non-profit environment.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in grant writing and fund development in a non-profit environment.
  • Proven track record of securing grant funding from various sources.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling grant proposals.
  • Strong research skills to identify and evaluate grant opportunities.
  • Proficiency in using fundraising software and CRM systems (experience with DonorPerfect is an asset).
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with funders and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Membership with AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) or a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) designation is an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check and an Intervention Record Check.
