THE OPPORTUNITY

Runnymede Healthcare Centre Foundation (RHCF) is seeking its inaugural Executive Director (ED) to lead the Foundation's operations, develop its team, and enhance fundraising capacity to advance philanthropic support for Runnymede Healthcare Centre (RHC) and its upcoming campaign.

This is a unique opportunity to be a part of history in the making as Runnymede Healthcare Centre plans to build Canada’s first Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) Centre of Excellence for First Responders. As a leader in the field of rehabilitation, and a history of working with First Responders, this will be the only centre of its kind in the country; Runnymede will lead PTSI research, drive innovation and education, and set standards of evidence based PTSI care across Canada and around the globe.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will set the overall fundraising strategy and lead its execution. In the short and medium term, this will entail building the Foundation’s fundraising and volunteer capacity, overseeing financial and administrative matters, and strategically guiding the engagement of key prospects in partnership with members of the Board, RHC’s CEO, and the Campaign Cabinet.

Excited by the challenge of a start-up and the opportunity to fuel innovation in the rehabilitation and PTSI landscape, the Executive Director will be a skilled relationship manager and self-starter who is able to leverage, partner with, and build upon the work and support provided by KCI Counsel to the PTSI Campaign and in the establishment of the Foundation.

The Foundation has office space in Runnymede Healthcare Centre.  An appropriate hybrid work model will be determined by the Executive Director and Board of Directors aligned with the needs of the Foundation.

ABOUT RUNNYMEDE HEALTHCARE CENTRE

Runnymede Healthcare Centre is a system leader in the provision of innovative rehabilitation and medically complex care for adults with neurological disorders, other chronic illnesses, and palliative needs. RHC helps patients restore functional abilities so that they may reintegrate back into the community. RHC is located at Runnymede Road and Dundas Street in West Toronto and comprises both a treatment facility and a soon-to-be-completed long-term care facility. RHC rehab patients receive treatment from our expert clinical care team which includes physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other clinicians. Together, they are committed to providing the appropriate level of care for patients to achieve their clinical goals. RHC provides a 7-day model of care, outpatient services, and soon, long-term care through a new 200-bed facility scheduled to receive its first residents in spring of 2025.

ABOUT RUNNYMEDE’S POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS INJURY CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE & CAMPAIGN

Building upon its leadership in the field of rehabilitation, and a history of working with First Responders, Runnymede Healthcare Centre plans to build Canada’s first and only Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) Centre of Excellence to help First Responders get back to the healthiest version of themselves. The PTSI Centre of excellence will deliver targeted in-person and virtual programming through two new purpose-built sites, one at 3434 Dundas St. West in Toronto, and one in rural Peel Region. To date, RHC has received investments from both the provincial and federal governments for the project and is pursuing other sources of government funding. In addition, RHC is in active planning for a $25 million Capital Campaign, supported by KCI counsel. 

As the first and only centre of its kind in the country, Runnymede will lead PTSI research, drive innovation and education, and set standards of evidence based PTSI care across Canada and around the globe. 

There are approximately 37,340 First Responders seeking care for PTSI in Ontario, which will grow to 47,000+ by 2040. First Responders and frontline healthcare workers face traumatic experiences unique to their occupations every day. Indeed, the job of police, firefighters, paramedics, corrections officers, doctors, nurses and PSWs is to run towards someone’s worst day, while most of us run away from it. This puts First Responders at 10x greater risk of developing PTSI (10-35%) compared to the general population (2-3%). It is also common for them to have other, concurrent health disorders including substance abuse and mood and anxiety disorders, making diagnosis and treatment more complex.

Currently, there is no dedicated First Responder facility in Canada for PTSI. Moreover, when First Responders in Ontario with PTSI do try to get help, they face several barriers including the stigma they feel in asking for support, lack of appropriate, trauma-informed support when they do reach out, long wait times for mental healthcare, difficulty navigating care across multiple settings and providers, cumbersome administrative processes for accessing supports, and fragmented and inconsistent programming across organizations, unions, associations, and commands.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Leadership & Governance

• Support the Board of Directors to successfully carry out their strategic leadership, stewardship, monitoring, and decision-making accountabilities.  This includes supporting all Board activities, attending Board and committee meetings, and providing required reports and other materials.
• Participate in the identification, cultivation, recruitment, and retention of Board members and other key volunteers who contribute to the Foundation’s development activities.
• Proactively work and communicate with the Board to support their efforts in policy development, and ensure accountability, transparency, and appropriate risk management.
• Determine short and long-term Foundation goals, develop accompanying operational plans, execute projects and programs to achieve those goals, in concert with the Board of Directors and in collaboration with the Health Centre.
• Align Foundation activities and cases for support with Health Centre priorities, strategy, brand, and values.
• Direct the development of the Foundation’s annual operating budget and financial targets.
• Develop benchmarks to measure progress in the implementation of the Foundation’s annual plan and budget. 
• Build the capacity of the Foundation by assessing the existing programs, events, and initiatives.  Refine, improve, and build on existing strengths and new opportunities, and plan for required resources to ensure maximum efficiencies and results.
• Foster effective teamwork among the Board, staff, volunteers, hospital leadership and external stakeholders, engaging them in the philanthropic mission of the Foundation.
• Direct and monitor all Foundation administrative functions, including budgeting, financial management and reporting, and policy administration, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
• Work collaboratively with the Health Centre CFO to ensure proper financial oversight of the Foundation. 
• Ensure the Foundation’s compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.

Fundraising, Donor Engagement & Campaign

• Accountable for the development, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of all fundraising initiatives and promote strategic and integrated implementation in alignment with the Health Centre.
• Lead the Foundation in building capacity by developing diversified fundraising strategies; plan and execute operational plans for all revenue streams, and develop benchmarks to measure and monitor performance against these plans.
• In consultation and partnership with KCI counsel, lead the development and execution of the major campaign for the Post-Traumatic Stress Injury Centre of Excellence
• Directly manage a personal portfolio of prospects and donors including individuals and foundations, and corporations and community organizations. 
• Develop a successful Major Gifts program with robust pipelines of major gift donors, building on existing relationships while identifying new opportunities.
• Develop effective strategies for donor recognition, stewardship, and engagement to ensure effective donor relations are implemented across all donor levels.
• Work with the Health Centre CEO and leadership team to ensure collaboration, integration, and coordination to leverage donor engagement.

 Marketing & Community Engagement

• Act as the main spokesperson and ambassador for the Foundation; build effective relationships with the community including government representatives, media, and other community organizations, and businesses.
• Develop communication and marketing activities that build awareness and promote the Foundation and Health Centre.
• Collaborate closely with the Health Centre to ensure alignment on all key messages.
• Develop and deliver consistent impact reporting on Foundation activities.

 Human Resource Management

• Build an organizational resourcing plan aligned with short and long term needs including hiring and managing Foundation staff and other required supports. 
• Provide leadership, management, and coaching to the Foundation’s employees. 
• Establish performance measures and goals for all direct reports, aligned with the goals of the Foundation. 
• Ensure appropriate personnel policies and procedures are developed and maintained. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

• Progressive leadership and management experience in a fundraising environment; alternatively, a successful background in sales and/or marketing ideally in a not-for-profit environment.
• Broad fundraising experience with proven success soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and community organizations.
• Engagement in a major fundraising campaign will be a strong asset.
• Expertise in Board relations and supporting effective governance boards and senior volunteer leaders in fundraising.
• Demonstrated success in designing and executing proactive revenue generation strategies and programs.
• Exceptional relationship-building and networking skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences effectively and passionately.
• Business development skills and entrepreneurial spirit to drive new connections and partnerships with Health Centre and community stakeholders.
• Ability to develop and apply sound and effective strategies, business practices, systems, policies, that drive operations and deliver results. 
• Strong knowledge of financial, legal, and regulatory requirements of a non-profit organization.
• Strong communication skills, including listening, speaking, and writing.
• Ability to build, lead and motivate individuals and teams.
• Familiarity with and experience in the application of systems, data and software for the support of fundraising programs and donor management.
• Working knowledge of marketing and communications to support brand building and awareness initiatives.
• An equivalent combination of education and related work experience will be considered. Experience and/or interest working within the healthcare sector would be considered an asset.

The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $220,000, plus up to 15% performance-based compensation and includes an industry-leading pension plan (HOOPP), and an excellent benefits package.
