Assistant Security Supervisor

Reporting to the Director of Facilities & Operations the incumbent is responsible for assisting in maintaining the security of the Gallery. This role involves managing security systems, supervising control room staff and contract guards, and coordinating responses to security incidents. The Assistant Security Supervisor will operate and maintain security systems, monitor CCTV, and assist in developing security policies and procedures. The position requires independent judgment within established guidelines, with oversight from the Director of Facilities & Operations for unusual or complex issues.

 

What You Will Do

Control Room Management:

•        Monitor and respond to alarms, CCTV footage, and radio communications; deploy guards as needed.

•        Conduct routine maintenance, calibration, and inspections of security systems, adjusting CCTV detectors as necessary for changes in exhibition layout.

•        Assist in developing and implementing security policies and procedures; make recommendations to improve security functions.

•        Perform regular backups of the computerized security system.

•        Handle inquiries from staff and the public at the control room; issue and collect keys, ID passes, and keycards.

•        Supervise, train, schedule, and review the work of control room and contract security staff; approve timesheets.

General Responsibilities:

•        Monitor the Gallery building to ensure the safety of exhibitions, collections, visitors, volunteers, and staff.

•        Assist the Director of Facilities & Operations during emergencies and in overseeing the quality of service, hospitality, and security for visitor comfort and safety.

•        Maintain records and prepare reports on assigned activities.

•        Liaise with contractors, institutions, and emergency personnel.

•        Support the Gallery’s goals in promoting a cohesive brand identity.

This role contributes to the overall success of the Facilities and Operations team and ensures contribution to the Gallery’s strategic goals.

 

What You Bring to the Role

 

As Assistant Security Supervisor, you have successfully completed Grade 12 and bring a minimum of 1-2 years' supervisory experience, along with BST 1 & 2 certification and specialized training in security. You also have extensive experience in managing security operations within a computerized environment, preferably in a large public venue. Occupational First Aid Level II certification is an asset.

 

In addition, you have:

•        Extensive knowledge of security systems, policies, procedures, and regulations.

•        Experience with computerized security, fire alarms, and electronic surveillance.

•        Familiarity with building layouts and security-related infrastructure.

•        Knowledge of hospitality principles and safety regulations.

•        Experience in supervising and training staff, including contract security.

•        Ability to implement security plans, detect suspicious activity, and take preventative action.

•        Strong interpersonal and public relations skills, with the ability to handle diverse situations tactfully.

•        Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and experience in record-keeping and report preparation.

 

 

COMPENSATION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Salary: Pay Grade 18: Step 1: $26.84 per hour.

Schedule:  Tuesday – Saturday. B Shift Pattern: 4pm-12am

           

This is a unionized position. This assignment falls under the jurisdiction of CUPE Local 15 – VMECW. 

This is an in-office position at the Gallery’s downtown Vancouver location.
