Join the Sanare Centre team as a Specialized Criminal Justice Navigator (SCJN) being pivotal in facilitating support and guidance for survivors of child abuse and sexual violence within a provincial network of victim service providers. The SCJN will operate at the intersection of various entities, forging collaborative relationships with Regional Victim Service Societies (RVSSs), municipalities, and other key partner organizations. The SCJN position is primarily based out of Brooks, AB with frequent travel to Medicine Hat, AB as the secondary location occasionaly being the Sanare Centre.

The Specialized Criminal Justice Navigator (SCJN) primary responsibility is to empower victims of sexual violence and child abuse, offering them comprehensive assistance as they navigate the intricate pathways of the criminal justice system. This entails providing personalized support tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of the individual. The SCJN will also build public awareness and improve access to criminal justice supports through the provision of school and community-based education in the Brooks, Bassano, and County of Newell region.


Position Responsibilities

Expectations of the Specialized Criminal Justice Navigator (SCJN) are guided by the Canadian Victims’ Bill of Rights, Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act, Victims of Crime Regulations, and the Alberta Victims of Crime Protocol. Position responsibilities include:

• Work with a variety of team members to execute Sanare’s mission, mandates, and service delivery goals.

• Aware and comply with all governing legislations, regulations, industry standards, codes, and organizational policies.

• Provide legal information, advice, support and advocacy to adult sexual violence survivors and child/youth survivors of sexual, physical, emotional abuse and neglect.

• Support and inform victims about the criminal justice system and opportunities for victims of crime to participate, including court navigation.

• Provide information and support regarding victims’ programs, including the Victims of Crime Assistance Program (VAP), Victim Impact Statements, Community Impact Statements, and the Restitution Recovery Program, plus any local or alternative assistance programs available.

• Liaison with our region’s services and local criminal justice agencies on behalf of the victim.

• Assist with application processes and facilitate referrals to other resources including community sources, Regional Victim Services Societies (RVSS), and municipal police service-based victim services.

• Collaborate with Regional Victim Service Societies (RVSS) frontline staff and/or with municipal police service-based victim services with courtroom orientation and accompaniment.

• Provide immediate emotional and practical support to victims.

• Provide on-going case management which includes needs assessments, victim safety plan, provide local and regional resources, for support, program evaluations, follow-ups, etc.

• Advocate for victims to major criminal justice partners on behalf of the victim (ex. Crown, Municipal and Indigenous Victim Services Unit, etc.)

• Identify and collaborate with the partners to address any barriers (real or perceived) to accessing victim services.

• Develop impactful relationships with schools, community organizations, and the public within Sanare's service area, to raise awareness about victim’s services and criminal justice navigation supports.

• Provide information, awareness, and education sessions informing about sexual violence and child abuse, pre-reporting options, and accessing services.

• Conduct presentations and workshops on mandate related topics to community and school-based organizations.

• Responsible for collecting, analyzing and reporting program specific data for evaluation purposes.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Health, Human Services, Behavioral Sciences, Social Sciences, Community Services, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institute. Equivalencies of a combination of education and directly related experiences may be considered.
  • At least two years' related experience required.
  • Previous work experience within a social work or not-for-profit setting would be ideal but not required.
  • Previous work experience providing community or youth education is ideal; not required.

Skills & Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrates compassion through non-judgmental words and actions.
  • Fluent understanding of the Criminal Justice System.
  • Cultural sensitivity and competence in addressing needs of diverse populations.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with both lay members of the community and professionals from a wide range of sectors.
  • Knowledge and experience in crisis and suicide intervention.
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources.
  • Experience in the provision of gender-based violence services, criminal justice service, mentorship, community development, and case management.
  • Talented in prioritizing and managing multiple work tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule inclusive of evening and weekends.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software and ability to work with client management databases and computers.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Enhanced Reliability Status Security Clearance for the RCMP.
