General Information

Saffron Centre is a non-profit charitable organization offering specialized, trauma-informed support services to survivors of sexual violence and their support persons. Our services include a comprehensive range of counselling programs, a specialized police and court support unit, and a highly reputable public education program. Saffron’s educators deliver presentations to children as young as 5 years old, with content spanning the entire school system and a range of professional and caregiver workshops. We are proud to contribute to the culture of sexual violence prevention through our educational programming.

Reporting to the Director of Justice, Research and Outreach (“Director, JRO”), and working alongside other JRO staff, students, and volunteers. This is a full-time staff position primarily responsible for providing information and education to the community with the goal of engaging others in preventing sexual violence.

Responsibilities

Public Education

•       Collaborate with the Public Education Team to address any inquiries about the Public Education program in a timely manner.

•       Book presentations/workshops in accordance with the Organization’s Public Education Agreement.

•       Work with the Office Manager to organize invoicing for mileage, accommodations, and donations paid by the booking agency.

•       Plan and deliver presentations and workshops both in-person and virtually, to all ages.

•       Receive disclosures of sensitive information from children, youth, and adults, and resource them appropriately according to relevant legislation and identified need.  

•       Conduct outreach to businesses and community agencies in Strathcona County and surrounding service areas.

•       Conduct research relating to the development of new content and resources for the Public Education program.

•       Design and update professional workshops consistent with guidelines set out by Saffron Centre Ltd and subject to the mandate of the Organization. 

•       Respond to community collaboration requests with the goal of advancing the Organizational mission.

 

Additional Duties

•       Maintain a monthly collection of statistics on the Public Education program and complete all monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting requests from the Director, JRO.

•       As may be required, participate in and provide support for Saffron Centre events/activities including workshops, fundraising events, general operations or administration, interagency meetings, community awareness activities, etc.

•       Participate in supervision and debriefings with the Director, JRO.

 

Skills and Abilities

•       Demonstrated comfort and professionalism speaking about sensitive topics to large groups of people, including children, youth, and adults.

•       Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build positive rapport on both an individual and group level quickly.

•       Self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and the capacity to work independently.

•       Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive relationships on both an individual and group level.

•       Passion for sexual violence advocacy and a desire to lower barriers to access for those who have experienced sexual violence.

 

Qualifications and Competencies

•       Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Education, Criminology, Social Work, Communications, Psychology, or a related discipline.

•       Valid class 5 driver’s license, a personal vehicle, and valid liability insurance.

•       Prior paid or unpaid public speaking experience.

•       Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.

•       Clear Child Intervention Record Check from Children’s Services Alberta.

•       A signed Oath of Confidentiality is required to work, volunteer, or complete a practicum at the Organization.

•       A flexible schedule, including during evenings, is required.

•       Familiarity with the Child, Youth, and Family Enhancement Act, the Children’s First Act, and the Personal Information Protection Act is considered an asset.

•       Suicide Intervention Training is an asset.

•       Mental Health First Aid is an asset.

•       Proficiency in Microsoft 365 is an asset.

Location:

This position is in-person and requires the successful candidate to work in the Centre, as well as to travel within a 200km radius of Sherwood Park for presentation and training delivery in all conditions. There is no opportunity for work from home or remote work.
