Communications Officer

The Opportunity

The Institute is seeking a Communications Officer to support its communications efforts. Reporting to the Manager of Communications, the Communications Officer will provide internal and external communications support with a primary focus on social media creation and management, crafting press releases, and media relations.

You will

  • Create engaging social media content (posts as well as graphics, infographics, videos, etc.) to disseminate and promote Institute research and messages.
  • Manage and maintain the currency of the Institute’s social media channels (LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram) and website content.
  • Analyze and provide actionable insights from social media channel metrics.
  • Write and edit press releases, backgrounders and other materials for Institute research and major announcements.
  • Develop and write communications materials targeted at various audiences including Institute members, policy stakeholders, media, and the informed public. These include assisting with the development of newsletters, annual reports and coordinating media requests for Institute experts, fellows and authors.
  • Prepare Institute materials for posting on our website.

 

The Candidate

Must-haves

  • Active interest in Canadian policy issues, with a high level of understanding of Canadian economics, history, politics, and governance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, communications, journalism or related fields or recognized equivalent required.
  • At least 2 years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a strong commitment to accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate advanced academic material to a number of different audiences, including researchers and the public.
  • Strong project management skills and an ability to operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Suite of applications, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Express.

 

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with website administration, content management and web analytics. Strong working ability with WordPress, Salesforce, Pardot, Google Analytics or other equivalent web analytic tools.
  • Excellent design sense in line with composition, colour, photography and typography.
  • Bilingualism (English/French).
