Position Profile:
Our Wildlife Care Assistant - Canada Summer Jobs provides youth with real-world learning opportunities in wildlife natural history, physiology, behavior, anatomy, nutrition, biosecurity, hygiene, volunteer management, and workplace health and safety. Program dates run from April 28, 2025 to August 31, 2025. Exact hours and length of placements are not known until granted and announced by the Canada Summer Jobs program.

You are an enthusiastic, goal-driven youth, with career aspirations in veterinary medicine, conservation, biology, zoology, veterinary medicine or similar discipline, who’s not afraid to get your hands dirty, and work hard, to gain valuable professional experience.
You are a dedicated team player, who wants to leverage your unique talents to support the support the success of Wildlife Rescue’s animal care program.

Who WE are:
Established in 1979, Wildlife Rescue Association of BC is a leader in the rehabilitation of wild animals and is committed to educating the public on how to coexist peacefully with wildlife. Located in Burnaby, BC, we are western Canada’s busiest wildlife rehabilitation centre, with around 5,000 animal patients admitted each year.
The Wildlife Rescue Association of BC is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples. We are grateful for the opportunity to be on this beautiful, shared territory.
Highlight of Key Responsibilities:
• Provide comprehensive care for nestling and fledgling songbirds, including feeding, cleaning, weighing and daily health checks.
• Prepare and deliver specialized diets to a variety of wildlife patients.
• Maintain clean and sanitized environments, including cages, aviaries, and equipment.
• Assist hospital staff with medical assessments and treatments.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues on patient progress, facility needs, and supply inventory.
• Assist with volunteer training.
• Balance multiple responsibilities in a dynamic, team-oriented workplace.
Key Qualifications & Experience
• Previous animal handling experience an asset.
• Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
• Ability to prioritize and problem-solve.
• Willingness to take initiative and work independently.
• Open availability (evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays).
