THE ORGANIZATION
The Juno Beach Centre Association (JBCA) is the Canadian-based charity that owns and operates the Juno Beach Centre (JBC), Canada’s Second World War museum and cultural centre in Normandy, France. The JBC is located on the beaches of the Normandy Landings in France, where Allied Forces began the liberation of Europe from Nazi rule on June 6th, 1944. The core purpose of the Association includes:
- Remembering and commemorating the sacrifices made by all Canadians who were part of the Allied victory in all theatres of war and at home during the Second World War.
- Educating adults and children of today and future generations about the role of Canada and Canadians in preserving the freedoms we are privileged to enjoy today.
The Association’s mandate in Canada is to build awareness domestically of Canada’s role in the Second World War, to create awareness and attract more Canadian visitors to the JBC, and to develop an environment of support for fundraising initiatives that will secure the future of the JBC as an essential destination for Canadian pilgrimage and remembrance. The JBCA is tasked with developing effective awareness and communications campaigns about the significance and pertinence of this heritage in modern-day Canada.
THE POSITION
In 2025, we are marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The Museum Project Assistants (MPA) will play an important role in priority initiatives related to the commemorative anniversary and ongoing initiatives relating to the Juno Beach Centre and in Canada. They will also help with developing new online resources available to the public as part of an effort to increase awareness of the JBC/JBCA. Each successful candidate will play a role in two of four potential projects for the Centre and junobeach.org:
- Transcribing, archiving and promotion of our Legacy of Honour veteran interview series
- Supporting the creation of a temporary exhibition on the life of children during the war
- Production and promotion of our Juno Beach and Beyond podcast, and other digital content
- Program development support for our Summer Institute Battlefields Tour
Duties of the Museum Project Assistant may include:
- Research into Second World War service files
- Data compilation
- Video interview transcription
- Digital archives description and collections management
- Research into historical topics, interviewees for Juno Beach and Beyond
- Podcast production (can include script writing, interviewing, audio editing, and promotion)
- Assisting with the creation and development of website content, social media content, blog posts, video content and other promotional materials
- Researching and connecting with youth networks
- Progress reporting
- Coordination with other team members
- Addressing general inquiries about the projects
- Other administrative duties as assigned
The successful candidate will be creative, driven, and self-motivated. Other expectations include:
- In the third or fourth year (or with a completed degree) in history, social sciences, education or other relevant education and experience
- Returning to school in the fall of 2025 (degree completion or graduate/postgraduate studies)
- A high degree of digital literacy
- Demonstrated experience with a variety of digital platforms and technologies
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Canadian history and/or the RCAF is considered an asset
- Strong writing and communications skills, basic understanding of social media networks
- Ability to take initiative and work independently to surpass expectations
- Excellent organizational, time management and research skills
- Team player and demonstrated strong interpersonal and communications skills
- Ability to think creatively and strategically in order to develop new approaches to achieve desired results
- Experience working within not-for-profit environments will be considered an asset
- Experience with transcription and/or other digital history projects will be considered an asset
- Experience with podcasting and/or video editing will be considered an asset
- Flexible and easily adapt to change
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and willing to learn and adapt to new systems
- Fluency in French is an asset but not mandatory, though basic knowledge of French is required.
