Executive Director (20 hrs/wk From September until the end of June)

About Us:
The Circle of Friends for Newcomers is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering language instruction for newcomers. Funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Canada (IRCC), the organization serves diverse communities by providing language instruction to newcomers to Canada (LINC) and supporting learners through innovative programs and services.

Position Overview:
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer of the Circle of Friends for Newcomers (Hamilton) for IRCC funded programming.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the part-time ED ensures the organization achieves its mission, maintains financial health, and adheres to IRCC standards and requirements. The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with a passion for newcomers, language instruction, community engagement, and organizational excellence.

 

Job Purpose

 

The primary purpose of the Executive Director role is to oversee the IRCC operations of the organization

 

The Executive Director will achieve this by:

•        Supervising the IRCC-funded staff of the Circle of Friends

•        Managing the completion of IRCC funding applications

•        Managing IRCC-related financial matters of the organization

•        Ensuring the timely completion and submission of reports required by IRCC

•        Communicating and working collaboratively with partner organizations

•        Collaborating with Board of Directors to set organizational goals and policies related to newcomer settlement

•        Updating social media postings

 

This position contributes to the organization as a whole by:

•         Supporting the organization’s need to fulfil the requirements of the funder

 

The Executive Director will be a highly organized, team player, with managerial skills, LINC experience and knowledge of current immigration trends

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Supervises the IRCC-funded staff of the Circle of Friends

 

•        Prepares and distributes employment agreements

•        Provides direction for staff activities

•        Monitors the performance of staff

•        Oversees the hiring of staff in collaboration with the LINC Coordinator and the Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) Supervisor where appropriate

 

Ensures that funding applications are completed in a timely manner

 

•        Completes and submits IRCC funding applications

•        Makes adjustments to plans in accordance to IRCC directives

 

Manages IRCC-related financial matters of the organization

 

•        Prepares budgets for IRCC-funded activities in collaboration with the bookkeeper

•        Monitors financial expenditures relative to the IRCC budget in collaboration with the bookkeeper

•        Approves financial reports submitted to IRCC

 

Communicates and works collaboratively with partner organizations

 

•        Communicates with IRCC program officer

•        Attends service provider organization (SPO) meetings

•        Communicates and works collaboratively with Victoria Park Community Homes Chief Operating Officer regarding space, leases and changing        situations

•      Acts as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for the IRCC programming, communicating and working collaboratively with partner organizations, community stakeholders, and the funder

 

Provides Program Delivery-time in the classroom

•        Conversation Circles, Workshops on LINC Curriculum Themes, Citizenship Preparation

 

Collaborates with Board of Directors to set organizational goals and policies related to IRCC funded programs

 

•        Advises the board on policy matters related to the newcomer settlement sector

•        Attends board meetings

•        Any other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  •  Post-secondary qualifications
  •  At least two years management experience
  •  Recent experience working with immigrants
  •  Background in English language instruction

Working Conditions 

  • The incumbent is required to work in a LINC program that provides support to newcomers in a community setting within a not-for-profit housing complex.
