Job Summary:
The Urban Farm Technician reports to the Supervisor, Urban Farm and works as part of a team to ensure the Urban Farm has an adequate volume and variety of crops available for weekly sales. A wide variety of crops are grown in field conditions and in unheated greenhouse settings. The work varies from week to week and will be physically demanding. A combination of walking, bending, standing for long periods of time, lifting, and repetitive activities will be required. This position will assist with crop production, workshops, and volunteer groups, and will participate in Farm Markets with other Urban Farm staff. Please note that the nature of the work requires you to be outside in all types of weather.
NOTE: This Is an Agriculture Canada Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) funded position. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Be between the ages of 16 and 30 at the start of their employment.
• Be unemployed or underemployed.
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a status refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
• Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) during the project period.
• Previous employees who were hired under the Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) are not eligible.
• Employees in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel measures are not eligible unless they have received refugee status or have become permanent residents.
Your Role:
Archway’s Urban Farm Technician with the Urban Farm contributes by:
• Working with the vegetable and fruit crops by preparing beds, seeding, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, etc.
• Managing the watering schedule.
• Preparing and packaging the crops to sell at the Farmers’ Market.
• Mowing grass, maintaining and expanding the growing space and buildings of the Urban Farm site.
• Assisting with education programs and workshops for residents and school children in the Abbottsford/ Mission areas.
• Assisting with family-friendly events and camps throughout the summer (June-August).
• Assisting with hosting the sales booth at the local Farmer’s Market and other events as required.
• Representing Archway Urban Farm at community education events such as Berry Fest.
• Assisting with volunteer groups.
This position is a great fit for someone who likes physical outdoor work with crops, farming, and gardening, and enjoys educating residents and school children about growing market crops and connecting people to nature and fresh food.
Our Offer
• Wage: $19.00 per hour

Getting an Interview – you will be considered if you have:
• A high school diploma with experience in crop management OR a diploma or degree in Horticulture, Biology, Agriculture, Agriculture Science, Agriculture Business, Crop Science, Crop Production, or in a related discipline, OR a combination of education and experience.
• Experience in farming is an asset.
• Experience with gardening, garden equipment, usage of garden machinery and material is an asset.
• Experience in the coordination of activities is an asset.
• Experience working with children is an asset.
• Reviewed and meet the YESP eligibility criteria for this position.
The Job Requires you to have:
• The ability to get to and from work and to and from Farm Markets and events.
• Ability to use mowers, trimming and pruning equipment.
• Knowledge of food safety and safe working procedures.
• Ability to work weekends and/or evenings to assist with Farm Market sales.
• Ability for physical labour related to garden maintenance and crop production, which will include periods of constant motion including walking, repetitive tasks, lifting, bending, and long periods of standing.
• Ability to lift between 20 to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
• Ability to adhere to health and safety protocols.
• Knowledge and ability for food safety and safe working procedures.
• Availability for flexible work hours.
• A valid BC Driver’s License and satisfactory driver’s record is an asset.
• Up-to-date Tetanus vaccine is strongly recommended.
• A satisfactory criminal records check is a condition of employment.
