Temporary, Fixed -term Contract, 6-month contract

The Role

The Driver & On-Site Attendant – PALS Mobile Unit is responsible for relocating, securing and supporting the PALS Mobile Unit to ensure functionality and safety for medical staff. This position is essential for the safe and reliable transportation of animals.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

On-Site Support

  • Ensure the safety and functionality of the surgical unit by engaging the public to prevent any disruptions.
  • Answer public inquiries regarding PALS program as required.
  • Support buddy system philosophy.
  • Transporting animals safely and efficiently, including from remote or difficult-to-access areas, while managing varying weather conditions.
  • Assist with trapping and transporting community (feral) cats under the TNR program as required.

 

Trailer Setup & Tear Down

  • Prepare the trailer and truck for departure following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure the security of all Edmonton Humane Society property, including the trailer.
  • Assist with off-loading trailer contents as needed.
  • Stock and replenish necessary supplies such as water, gas, and medical essentials.
  • Check the trailer’s mechanical operations and establish electrical connections as required.
  • Conduct Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) site checks, ensuring the area is hazard-free and properly marked with pylons and other safety measures.

 

Transportation

  • Ensure the truck and trailer are connected securely and in accordance with procedures.
  • Drive the trailer safely to and from designated locations in and around Edmonton, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Park, stabilize, and secure the trailer at each location.      

 

Education & Requirements 

  • Minimum one year experience driving a truck and trailer, particularly in tight areas
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

 

Skills & Abilities 

The ideal candidate will have experience driving and maneuvering trailers, ensuring safe and efficient transportation to various locations. A strong understanding of occupational health and safety protocols is essential, as is the ability to work in diverse weather conditions and challenging environments. While experience handling and transporting animals safely is preferred, it is not required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are key to engaging with the public and supporting medical staff effectively. Additionally, the candidate must be able to follow procedures, work independently, and manage time efficiently to ensure smooth operations.

Compensation & Hours

•         Compensation: EHS offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation package

•         Hours: This position requires travel throughout Edmonton and will consist of daytime shifts, two to four times per week, during weekdays only. The Mobile Unit season will run 2 days per week from May 6 to September 25, 2025.
