Statement of Intention 
This position is designated for Indigenous peoples, with particular preference for those who identify as Wabanaki and/or have strong connections to the Wabanaki artistic community. We are seeking candidates who have deep knowledge of and cultural sensitivity toward Indigenous artistic practices, traditions, and ways of life.

THIS MOMENT, THIS POSITION
The Executive Director (ED) of Mawi’Art plays a pivotal role in guiding the organization through a time of opportunity and growth. As the leading advocate for Indigenous artists in Atlantic Canada, Mawi’Art is strengthening its programs, expanding its reach, and enhancing the supports available to Indigenous artists.


Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED ensures that Mawi’Art’s programs, services, and initiatives align with its mission and vision. This role is instrumental in fostering relationships with Indigenous artists and communities, overseeing day-to-day operations, and securing funding to support Mawi’Art’s goals. The ED will be a strong leader who understands the intersection of arts, community, and cultural advocacy, and who is committed to uplifting Indigenous artists in a meaningful and sustainable way.

Position Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead Mawi’Art’s strategic planning, ensuring alignment with its mission, values, and vision.
  • Strengthen governance by formalizing board structures, policies, and accountability measures.
  • Provide oversight and leadership for all programs, partnerships, and initiatives.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative organizational culture, centering Indigenous perspectives and community priorities.
  • Act as the primary spokesperson for Mawi’Art, representing the organization to the public, artists, funders, and partners.

Administrative & Operational Management

  • Supervise and support staff, ensuring a healthy and effective workplace.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including office management and organizational processes.
  • Implement and improve digital systems for efficiency, including financial management tools.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, bylaws, and governance structures.

Financial Oversight & Fundraising

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Treasurer.
  • Lead fundraising efforts, including grant writing, sponsorship outreach, and donor relations.
  • Secure long-term core funding from provincial and federal sources to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Strengthen financial reporting and ensure transparency in all financial matters.


Programming & Community Engagement

  • Develop and implement artist-centered programming that aligns with Mawi’Art’s mission.
  • Cultivate relationships with artists, ensuring their voices and needs guide organizational priorities.
  • Expand audience engagement and public awareness of Indigenous arts and culture.
  • Strengthen partnerships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations to advance opportunities for artists.
  • Ensure regional representation across all Atlantic provinces, fostering a stronger presence in PEI, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Nova Scotia.

Board & Governance

  • Act as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff.
  • Provide regular reports to the Board on financial, operational, and programmatic activities.
  • Support Board development and engagement, ensuring strong governance practices.
  • Assist in Board recruitment, training, and succession planning as needed.


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Executive Director role is a strategic and community-driven leader with a passion for Indigenous arts and cultural advocacy. They bring experience in non-profit management, community engagement, and program development, as well as a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and governance structures.

Education and Experience:

  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person, with a strong commitment to Wabanaki artistic and cultural traditions.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Social Sciences, Leadership, or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of senior management experience.
  • Leadership experience in an arts, cultural, or community-based organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in non-profit management, community engagement, and program development.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong financial acumen, including experience with financial management, fundraising, and grant writing.
  • Knowledge of government funding processes and relationship-building with funders.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and understanding of nonprofit governance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse interest holders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a strategic mindset.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate staff, resolve conflicts, and foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Comfort with digital tools and transitioning from paper-based to digital financial and administrative systems.
  • Ability to navigate complex political and cultural landscapes while maintaining organizational integrity and community trust.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Familiarity with MS Office and various business software applications.
  • Experience managing financial resources, strong accounting skills, and strong literacy and numeracy skills.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license (Class 4 would be an asset) and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • First Aid & CPR certification and a criminal record check are required.
  • Knowledge of local Indigenous history, culture, and community resources is preferred.

THE PACKAGE
Salary: $90,000-100,000

Location: While most of Mawi’Art’s work currently takes place in Fredericton, NB, we welcome applications from across Canada and are open to exploring flexible working arrangements for candidates who reside within Atlantic Canada or are open to relocation.

Travel: Occasional travel throughout Atlantic Canada as required.
