Employment Type: Young Canada Works Internship; Full-time, on site, contract position starting June 2, 2025, ending December 31, 2025; 37.5 hours/week Monday to Friday, including occasional evenings and weekends

Compensation: $19.20/hour

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

The Diefenbunker is Canada’s most significant surviving Cold War artifact — it is an impressive four-storey underground facility that operated as the country’s central communications headquarters during the Cold War, ready at any moment in case of a nuclear attack. Today, it is a one-of-a-kind museum and national historic site, telling stories of national and international importance and welcoming visitors from around the world.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Audience Engagement Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to enhance visitor engagement, build lasting relationships with diverse audiences, and create meaningful connections between the museum and its community. This role focuses on designing and improving our communications, outreach initiatives, and services and programs that inspire repeat visitation and deepen audience involvement.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Audience Engagement and Development:

  • Assist marketing team with defining target audience segments for each core offering;
  • Make recommendations on additions or improvements to the museum’s Audience Development Plan, including segmentation, communications, outreach, and initiatives;
  • Develop strategies to engage with diverse audiences, including French speakers, youth, seniors, and underrepresented communities;
  • Share learnings from audience research with the marketing and programming teams to enhance our visitor experiences;
  • Review and update content within the museum’s website and email communications to meet accessibility standards;
  • Stay informed about trends in museum engagement and visitor experience to bring fresh ideas to the role and to share best practices with museum staff and volunteers.

 

Communications and Outreach:

  • Develop targeted communications for key visitor segments (individuals, parents, educators, tour operators) that integrate clear calls to action to encourage future engagement with museum activities, implementing associated automation and audience tagging in an email marketing platform;
  • Write, design, and disseminate regular communications for museum members and donors using an email marketing platform;
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create audience-focused content for newsletters, the museum website, digital advertising, and other communication platforms;
  • Build relationships with community organizations, schools, and local businesses to increase awareness and foster partnerships;
  • Coordinate external requests for the museum’s participation in community events;
  • Develop a plan for a new membership tier for schools and businesses;
  • Research relevant media contacts to update the organization’s database;
  • Represent the museum at community and networking events to promote its offerings;
  • Act as a key liaison between the museum and its visitors, gathering feedback to improve experiences and programs.

 

Data and Analysis:

  • Utilize visitor data and feedback to assess the success of engagement initiatives and make data-driven improvements;
  • Record and report on audience participation, demographics, and outreach impact;
  • Track engagement of audience segments to measure success of targeted communications and initiatives, and to make recommendations;
  • Regularly monitor visitor experience survey feedback for trends and satisfaction, and report to relevant managers on necessary actions to address concerns;
  • Support the Marketing Manager with implementation of a new customer relationship management platform, including drafting a proposal with timelines for platform integration and preparing audience data for migration.

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary degree in Museum Studies, Marketing, Communications, Education, or a related field;
  • 2+ years of experience in audience engagement, programming, or marketing, preferably within a museum or a cultural or non-profit organization;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with diverse audiences;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and maintaining attention to detail;
  • Proficiency in using customer relationships management (CRM) systems, email marketing platforms, survey softwares, and data analysis tools;
  • Passion for museums, education, and community engagement;
  • Ability to provide a Police Record Check;
  • Meet the eligibility requirements for Young Canada Work Building Careers in Heritage.

 

POSITION ASSETS

  • Experience in audience development, program development, and or community liaison;
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive programming;
  • Creative problem-solving and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
