Job Summary

General Support Staff supervise and train General Support Volunteers in the day to day housekeeping and general maintenance of TWC’s facilities, grounds and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

●         Maintains a positive, professional, and safe working environment for humans and wild patients

●        Responsible for cleaning TWC facilities; sweeping and mopping floors, removing garbage and recycling, cleaning washrooms, dusting, and other cleaning duties as necessary

●        Provides supportive cleaning for wildlife rehabilitation team e.g., cleaning empty cages, doing laundry, and other related tasks

●        Assists with inventories and orders cleaning supplies as needed

●        Assists with upkeep of outdoor areas and entrances, clears snow, removes litter

●        Maintains equipment and tools e.g., washers and dryers, hoses, disinfectant dispensers, sinks, drains etc.

●        Provides assistance with cage repair and maintenance

●        Provides oversight of and feedback on performance of General Support Volunteers

●        Assists in training facilities and other department’s seasonal staff, interns, co-op students and volunteers on tasks and safety measures related to General Support responsibilities

●        Assists with minor repairs as needed e.g., painting, plumbing and minor carpentry

●        Other related tasks as needed

Qualifications

Education:

●       High School Diploma

●       College Building Trades Diploma an asset

●       Training or Certification in First Aid, WHMIS, Health and Safety an asset

Experience:

●       Previous experience cleaning and maintaining a similar sized/type of facility preferred

●       Experience painting, plumbing, mechanical or minor carpentry/renovation work an asset

Skills and Abilities:

●       Excellent ability to follow instructions and protocols and work without direct supervision

●       Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

●       Ability to work well with a variety of people

●       Good verbal and written communication skills

●       Ability to work safely and to follow all health and safety protocols and practices

●       Sensitive to the special needs of wild animals in captivity

●    Demonstrated interest in wildlife or the environment

Physical Requirements:

●        Required to perform heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds

●        Requires lifting, bending, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy to moderately heavy objects and materials and some combination of climbing and balancing to include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and other moderately strenuous activities

Working Conditions: 

●        Required to walk on concrete floors in the building and uneven ground outside in a fast-paced, physically active role

●        Frequently required to use personal protective equipment

●        This position requires working near materials and animals that may trigger allergic reactions

●        This position requires weekend and/or shift work

●        This position occasionally requires outside work in all types of weather and condition
