Position Description

We are seeking a dynamic and results-driven Executive Director to lead the Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation (VJKF) through a period of strategic growth. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the implementation of operational plans, strategic initiatives, and program expansion to advance the Foundation’s mission. This position is funded for three years, with the opportunity for extension. Candidates should have a strong understanding of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit culture and a commitment to promoting the mission and values of VJKF. Preference will be given to individuals of Indigenous ancestry. 

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate degree or higher, preferably in business, finance, communications, or IT. 
  • Proven experience leading a non-profit organization. 
  • Strong IT expertise, including both technical and policy-related matters. 
  • Experience producing compelling communications materials. 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Demonstrated skill in creating visually appealing and informative publications, such as newsletters, brochures, reports, etc. 
  • Proven track record in fostering strong, trusting relationships with volunteers by valuing their input, maintaining commitments, and using a collaborative approach 
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and a sensitivity to cultural differences. 
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, improving, secondary and post-secondary education opportunities for Indigenous students. 
  • Awareness of the challenges faced by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) students in both urban and rural areas of Canada. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain partnerships. 
  • Experience in budget management, financial oversight, and administrative processes, including setting priorities and establishing efficient systems. 
  • Willingness to travel extensively, including extended absences to support program delivery. 

Applicants must hold a valid Canadian driver’s license. A comprehensive benefits program and competitive salary is provided. Salary $87,500 Benefits 15% of salary in lieu of benefits plan.
