About Ecotrust Canada’s Indigenous Homelands Program

The Indigenous Homelands Program supports community members from remote First Nations to be able to return to and thrive on their homelands in ways that honour their social, cultural, and environmental well-being. Our team works on research and on-the-ground community projects, and produces several knowledge tools, with a focus on four key pillars: decolonial governance, land stewardship, circular economies, and holistic housing.

Position Summary

Ecotrust Canada is seeking a dedicated, thoughtful, and creative individual to join our small but passionate Indigenous Homelands team as our Indigenous Education Specialist. This position will support the long-term development, delivery, and adaptation of the Indigenous Housing & Homelands Public Education Curriculum, as well as launch and maintain two creative, accessible “toolkits.” This position is grounded in decolonial pedagogies and will ensure that our educational materials are grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and relevant to multiple learner types. Over time, the role will also support other knowledge mobilization initiatives, including our newly launched regional supply chain network.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about democratizing knowledge; is interested in supporting First Nations community members to learn about, understand, and advocate for their rights related to issues such as land tenure and housing; and is an educator at heart.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and coordination of downloadable educational workbooks aligned with toolkit modules
  • Co-create and facilitate educational workshops for community members, high school students, and leadership audiences
  • Support the design and delivery of in-person and virtual workshops and presentations
  • Edit and maintain a “living” version of the toolkit as new modules are developed (through a Wix-based website, with support from the graphic designer)
Skills and Qualifications
Required
  • Experience in Indigenous education, curriculum development, and land-based learning
  • Strong familiarity with Indigenous housing ecosystems, land governance, and/or cultural revitalization practices
  • Proven ability to facilitate educational activities across generations and learning styles, and particularly with adult education settings and senior high-school classrooms
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills for educational content
  • Comfortable with digital literacy, computer skills, and various platforms (and/or willingness to learn various platforms, such as Wix and Canva)
  • Experience working with or within First Nations governance structures
  • Experience, comfortability, and knowledge of rural and remote living
  • Knowledge of decolonial and anti-oppressive pedagogies
  • Understanding of and value for multiple ways of knowing
  • Experience teaching and designing curriculum in an informal educational setting, including public and “accidental” learning settings
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Understanding of Canada’s colonial history, its ongoing impacts on Indigenous communities, and a commitment to decolonization, reconciliation and justice-seeking endeavours
Preferred
  • Bilingual (English & French)
  • Lived experience in rural, remote, or Indigenous communities
