The Starfish Canada is merging with Sea Smart, an environmental charity dedicated to delivering marine conservation programming, and we’re searching for a passionate Program Lead to lead our Sea Smart school and public programs.

This role is a first-line management position within our organization. The successful candidate will exercise team leadership and supervise program educators and volunteers as needed.

This role will collaborate with the Programs team to ensure deliverables are developed and implemented with an equity lens and language accessibility to ensure an inclusive experience for diverse learners. 

To be eligible for this position, you must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

Key responsibilities will include the following: 

  • Coordinate and deliver school and public programs across Metro Vancouver, along with casual educators and volunteers. 
  • Manage bookings for school workshops, summer camps, and public events.
  • Support with designing curriculum and engagement materials, including program presentations, manuals, online resources etc
  • Recruit, train, support and supervise a team of educators and volunteers who facilitate programs. 
  • Oversee the development and delivery of The Starfish Canada’s Sea Smart summer camp program, including hiring and managing summer educators, designing summer camp content, applying for permits etc. 
  • Ensure procedures and protocols for safety and quality of programming are achieved.
  • Ensure program deliverables are completed within deadlines. 
  • Maintain records and tracking of program deliverables and bookings, including collecting impact metrics and maintaining the organization’s program impact metrics database. 
  • Provide general support for program participants via phone and email. 
  • Develop and manage relationships with schools and partnership opportunities.
  • Attend public engagement events and connect with the public, increasing brand awareness.
  • Other duties as required. 

The Sea Smart Program Lead reports to the  Director of Programs and will be supported through weekly check-ins and consistent communication. They will receive guidance on project planning and program management, and any additional framing and information that may support the team. As requested, additional mentorship and coaching opportunities can be made available.

Ideal qualifications

We welcome applications from individuals who may not meet all requirements. 

  • At least two years of experience working as an Educator or similar role.
  • At least two years of experience working with children and youth (ages 5-17), ideally in a formal or informal teaching role. 
  • Experience in workshop facilitation for youth and adults
  • Strong Interpersonal and Networking Skills: this role will be responsible for identifying opportunities to build relationships, network, and collaborate with different groups.
  • Proficiency with Google Suites is preferred. 
  • Ability to obtain a clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector. 
  • Minimum emergency first aid and CPR C-level certification within the last two years.
  • A valid class 5 BC driver’s license (or equivalent) is a necessity. This position will require driving for work purposes.  
  • French fluency is an asset.
