Position Summary
Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the senior leadership team, the CFO/Head of Finance will play a critical role in shaping the organization’s financial health and technological capabilities. This role oversees a finance team of 14 and an IT team of two, with key responsibilities spanning financial planning, operational oversight, and strategic guidance. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a passion for the not-for-profit sector and expertise in financial strategy, team leadership, and systems implementation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement both short-term and long-term financial strategies in alignment with Harbourfront Centre’s mission and goals.
- Provide expert advice to the CEO and Board of Directors on financial planning, risk management, and sustainability.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes to ensure financial stability.
- Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements and reports, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and funding agreements.
- Evaluate and improve financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to enhance operational efficiency and accountability.
- Directly supervise and mentor a finance team of 14, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
- Oversee a current IT team of two, ensuring alignment of technology strategy with organizational goals, with an eye to building out this function across the organization.
- Lead by example to cultivate a culture of transparency, inclusivity, and innovation across teams.
- Oversee the ongoing implementation of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, ensuring a smooth transition and optimal utilization of the system.
- Partner with the IT consultants to enhance technological capabilities, data management, and cybersecurity measures.
- Collaborate closely with the CEO and senior leadership team on financial strategy, organizational planning, and decision-making.
- Support fundraising efforts by providing financial expertise for grant applications, donor reporting, and partnership development.
- Support and Facilitate the Board Audit & Finance Committee with the Finance Chair, providing reports, detailed analyses and recommendations.
- Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks to safeguard Harbourfront Centre’s resources and reputation.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, financial, and contractual obligations, including charitable regulations.
Requirements
- CPA designation or equivalent financial qualification required.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in finance, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Proven track record in not-for-profit finance, including experience with complex funding models, grants, and donor reporting.
- Strong understanding of financial systems and technology; experience implementing Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an asset.
- Familiarity with IT management, including overseeing teams and aligning technology strategies with organizational needs.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and execute financial plans that support long-term organizational growth and sustainability.
- Leadership: Strong interpersonal skills to inspire, mentor, and manage cross-functional teams.
- Analytical Skills: Expertise in interpreting financial data to guide decision-making and improve operational efficiency.
- Communication: Excellent ability to articulate financial concepts to diverse stakeholders, including non-financial audiences.
- Adaptability: Resilient and proactive in navigating change, including new system implementations and evolving priorities.
