The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art is seeking an Assistant Curator to engage in the development of program content that highlights Indigenous arts and culture from Indigenous perspectives. In partnership with the Curator, the Assistant Curator will be instrumental in planning exhibitions and public programs, as well as nurturing relationships within the community to advance the Gallery’s mission.

Key responsibilities include collaborating with artists and external curators on exhibition design and installation, researching and creating educational materials, and managing the exhibition schedule. The Assistant Curator will also take the lead on certain exhibitions, prepare loan forms, coordinate touring exhibitions, and handle public inquiries regarding exhibition images. Additionally, support for grant proposals and fundraising efforts will be part of the role.

In terms of public programming, the Assistant Curator will work with the Curator and Education Programmer to develop a program schedule that complements exhibitions. This includes delivering exhibition tours, organizing artist-led workshops, and fostering community partnerships to enhance public programs. Participation in special events will also be expected.

The role includes aspects of collections management, such as meeting with donors and collectors, documenting and accessioning new materials, and maintaining a collections database.

Candidates should possess a post-secondary degree in visual arts, curatorial studies, museum studies, or a related field, alongside 2-3 years of experience in a gallery or museum setting. Knowledge of Indigenous artistic practices in Canada and experience working with Indigenous artists and communities are essential. Strong communication skills, the ability to handle fine art, and physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs are required. Proficiency in an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.

The position involves working four days a week, with flexibility for remote work aligned with program needs, and an annual salary of $48,000 commensurate with experience. The Bill Reid Gallery is dedicated to fostering a healthy workplace, offering flexible schedules, cultural leave, and eligibility for a group benefits plan. The Gallery values diversity among its staff and is particularly encouraging applications from Indigenous candidates, ensuring equitable access throughout the application process.
