Job Title: Shelters Health Care Aide (HCA)

Based at: Herb Jamieson Centre (10014 105A Ave NW)

Reports to: Charge Nurse (RN) and Health Services Manager

Hours of work: 4 days on, 4 days off, 12 hour shifts. Day shift (0700-1900) or night shift (1900-0700)

Job Summary: To support shelter staff with the management of ADLs and iADLs of clients within the shelter setting.

  • Assist with showering
  • Assist with grooming and dressing
  • Assist with other hygiene activities
  • Vital signs (must report to nurse)
  • Lice management
  • Report health concerns to nursing staff
  • Basic wound care
  • Advocate for the client's wellbeing
  • Medication administration and organization:

Description: The Health Care Aide will work within a larger interprofessional health team within our health focused shelter and is an integral member of the team. The HCA’s main focus is to support the client in the shelter with their activities of daily living and personal care. As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you are responsible for providing personal assistance, advocacy, comfort, and support services to clients who require short-term assistance or ongoing support. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality client-centered care while reflecting the values of Hope Mission.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • Certificate of completion of an accredited HCA program.
  • Must be registered with provincial HCA directory.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with homeless or vulnerable populations is an asset.
  • Experience with medication administration and management is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and apply de-escalation techniques as necessary.

Other Requirements:

  • Being a Christian Organization, we require our employees to be in agreement and sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Able to provide Criminal Record Checks and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • A letter of reference from a ministry or church is an asset
  • Adherence to Hope Mission’s Policies and Procedures.
