Position Overview

The Communications Manager will play a key role in shaping and amplifying the voice of Africa Centre by leading strategic communications, strengthening brand identity, and driving digital and community engagement. This role involves crafting compelling stories that highlight program impact, managing media relations and internal communications, supporting event promotion, and overseeing the organization’s digital presence across social media, websites, newsletters, and email campaigns. The ideal candidate is a creative and strategic communicator with a passion for storytelling, community-building, and advancing the mission of Africa Centre.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Communications and Leadership

  • Implement existing communications strategies and develop new approaches as needed
  • Lead cohesive, organization-wide messaging that strengthens Africa Centre’s reputation, brand identity and public presence
  • Mentor the communications team to build internal capacity and professional growth
  • Coordinate production with contract staff, suppliers, printers and advertising agencies
  • Support the executive director, board chair and senior leadership with speechwriting, messaging and briefing materials

Brand, Storytelling and Content

  • Craft compelling narratives that showcase program impact, success stories and
    organizational achievements
  • Ensure consistent, innovative use of Africa Centre’s brand across all platforms
  • Oversee multimedia content creation, including videos, graphics, podcast episodes, annual reports and program materials

Digital Engagement and Podcast Studio

  • Manage and grow Africa Centre’s digital presence across social media, websites,
    newsletters and email campaigns
  • Lead the podcast studio, developing innovative, community-focused stories that highlight
    programs and amplify African descent voices

Internal Communications

  • Use internal communication tools such as intranet, staff newsletters and communication
    boards to keep staff, board and volunteers informed
  • Collaborate with program leads to gather updates and share them in clear, accessible
    formats
  • Track and improve internal communication to strengthen engagement and organizational
    alignment

Event Communications and Public Relations

  • Lead communications planning and promotion for major events including Africa Day
    Gala and the All Africa Soccer Tournament and Festival
  • Write, coordinate and distribute news releases, information bulletins and media kits
  • Manage media relations and act as a spokesperson for Africa Centre
  • Oversee event-related communications, including timelines, strategy, budgets and post-event evaluation

Relationship Management and Partnership Coordination

  • Manage communications with funders, external partners and government stakeholders,
    ensuring coordinated announcements
  • Strategize and support national collaborations, including the Black National Funders
    Initiative Network (BNFIN) and Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative
    (SBCCI), aligning messaging to strengthen outcomes for Black communities across
    Canada

Measurement and Reporting

  • Monitor and analyze communications performance and engagement metrics
  • Prepare reports and adjust strategies to maximize reach, relevance and impact

ELIP

  • Lead communications strategy, storytelling and digital engagement for ELIP
  • Ensure ELIP communications align with its mission of bringing communities, organizations and individuals together to co-create solutions that meet newcomers’ needs and aspirations

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education required in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in communications, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement communications strategies that drive engagement and strengthen organizational reputation.
  • Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills, with demonstrated knowledge of CP style
  • Experience managing communications for major events, coordinating with funders and working with government partners.
  • Experience with content management systems, including WordPress, Keela and Monday.com, as well as proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and social media management tools.
  • Experience overseeing or producing multimedia content, video projects and digital
    campaigns.
  • Experience supervising or managing a communications team and supporting staff development.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Confident public speaker with experience handling media relations and acting as a spokesperson.
  • Photography and videography skills are considered an asset.
  • French language considered an asset.
  • Experience with podcast studio production considered an asset.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt and grow with the needs of the organization.
