Job Summary: We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) to join the healthcare team within our emergency shelter. As an EMR, you will work alongside the primary care paramedics and/or nurses to provide high-quality patient care during emergency responses and wellness checks for the vulnerably housed community. The successful candidate will be able to take rapid assessments and assist with providing treatment within their scope of practice. The EMR will contribute to providing leadership, training, and guidance to shelter staff colleagues on methods to promote the health and safety of both staff and clients. The EMR will be mobile in their care, able to safely provide services within the shelter and the property immediately surrounding it.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist in rapid assessments
• Emergency Response
• Wellness checks
• Documentation
• Continuing competency
• De-escalation
• Emotional/spiritual support
• Transfer of care
• Coordination with emergency services
• Advocate for client wellness
• Educate patients on preventative care and disease management
• Assist in supporting clients in mental health and addictions
• Comply with PIPA, privacy, confidentiality, FOIP
• Advise on HM policies and procedures
• Participate in interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the clinic
• Provide mentorship and preceptorship to colleagues, new staff, and students

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

• Active registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
• Active First Aid certification (preferably BLS-HCP).
• Active professional liability protection insurance. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Self-motivated and able to work well with minimal supervision.
• Capable of working collaboratively with the health care team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with vulnerable populations, especially those experiencing homelessness.
• Proficiency in computer skills and electronic medical record systems.
• Strong understanding of Culturally Informed Care and Trauma Informed Care.
• Strong communication skills.
• Candidates should demonstrate a strong capacity for independence, self-motivation, and the ability to proactively take initiative in their work.
