Job Summary:

Hope Mission is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Worker to support the safe, clean, and functional operation of our various facilities in Edmonton. The Maintenance Worker will perform a wide variety of building maintenance, repair, and groundskeeping tasks. This role requires hands-on experience in multiple trades, a valid driver’s license, and a heart for serving vulnerable populations in a compassionate, respectful, and professional manner.

Key Responsibilities: 

Building Maintenance and Repairs

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on shelter buildings and equipment.
  • Complete general repairs including drywall, painting, flooring, doors, windows, and fixtures.
  • Conduct minor carpentry work such as framing, repairs, shelving, and cabinetry.
  • Perform basic electrical work including replacing outlets, switches, light fixtures, and troubleshooting minor issues (within scope and code requirements).
  • Perform basic plumbing tasks such as repairing leaks, replacing faucets, toilets, and clearing drains.
  • Assist with inspections and identify maintenance issues requiring repair or contractor support.

Groundskeeping and Exterior Maintenance

  • Maintain exterior grounds including snow removal, lawn care, litter removal, and general site cleanliness.
  • Perform seasonal maintenance such as ice control, leaf removal, and minor exterior repairs.
  • Ensure walkways, entrances, and emergency exits remain safe and accessible.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all workplace health and safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are used properly and maintained in good working condition.
  • Report safety hazards, damage, or required major repairs to the supervisor promptly.
  • Support compliance with building codes, fire safety requirements, and shelter standards.

Transportation and Support

  • Drive company vehicles to transport tools, materials, and equipment between shelter locations.
  • Assist with set-up and tear-down for events, room reconfigurations, or emergency needs.
  • Support other departments as needed to ensure shelter operations run smoothly.

Qualifications and Experience: 

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in general building maintenance or a related trade.
  • Demonstrated experience in carpentry, basic electrical, and basic plumbing.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Physically capable of lifting, bending, standing, and working indoors and outdoors in all seasons.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade certification or coursework in a related field (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or building maintenance).
  • Experience working in shelters, non-profits, or community-based organizations.
  • Knowledge of Alberta building codes and safety standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed across multiple shelter locations.
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor environments, including weather extremes.
  • On-call or after-hours work may occasionally be required.
