About the role
Reporting to the Band Manager, The Facilities Manager is responsible for the care, safety, and stewardship of all Nation-owned buildings, grounds, and community spaces. This role provides leadership to facilities, garden, maintenance, and janitorial staff, ensuring spaces are safe, welcoming, well-maintained, and aligned with the Nation’s values, seasonal rhythms, and community priorities. The Manager plays a key role in asset protection, workforce development, and sustainability within a remote community setting.
We are seeking someone who brings a background in facilities management, leadership, and community service—grounded in respect for Indigenous values and stewardship of land and resources. The ideal candidate will have experience overseeing daily operations and maintenance in a remote or community setting, with a proven ability to lead teams, support workforce development, and care for assets in a way that reflects our commitment to safety, sustainability, and cultural integrity. A strong understanding of the unique needs of First Nations communities and a dedication to preserving our way of life are essential for this role.
What you will do
As the Facilities Manager for Pacheedaht First Nation, you will:
Care of Buildings & Community Space
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of the administrative buildings, including offices, meeting spaces, and common areas
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules to ensure safety, longevity, and cost efficiency
- Coordinate inspections, repairs, and upgrades related to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, fire safety, and security systems
- Ensure buildings meet applicable health, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inventories, and assets
- Oversee janitorial services to ensure cleanliness, hygiene, and respectful care of shared spaces
- Coordinate garbage, recycling, and waste removal services across all facilities
- Prepare buildings and grounds for seasonal and extreme weather conditions (e.g., snow removal, storm readiness, heat or cold protection measures)
- Respond to building emergencies, urgent repairs, and after-hours facility issues as required
People Leadership & Team Stewardship
- Supervise, schedule, and support labour staff, including maintenance workers and grounds staff
- Assign daily tasks and ensure work is completed safely and to standard
- Provide training, mentorship, and performance feedback
- Support capacity building and employment opportunities for community members
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to the Garden Manager
- Oversee general maintenance workers and janitorial staff, ensuring clear roles, accountability, and support
- Build strong working relationships grounded in respect, clear communication, and shared responsibility
Garden & Land-Based Operations
- Oversee planning, maintenance, and seasonal operations of the Garden Department
- Coordinate planting, harvesting, irrigation, composting, and tool management
- Support food security, beautification, and cultural or community gardening initiatives
- Ensure safe use of equipment and environmentally responsible practices
- Align garden and land-based work with seasonal cycles, cultural teachings, and community priorities
Safety, Wellness & Shared Responsibility
- Enforce workplace health and safety standards and safe work procedures
- Conduct regular safety meetings, site inspections, and incident reporting
- Ensure staff have appropriate training and certifications
- Respond to emergencies and coordinate after-hours or urgent repairs as required
- Promote a culture of safety, care, and collective responsibility across all facilities and teams
Fleet, Equipment & Asset Care
- Oversee the Nation’s vehicle fleet, including coordination of repairs, servicing, and preventative maintenance
- Maintain vehicle and equipment maintenance schedules, warranties, and service records
- Coordinate inspections, licensing, and safe operation of vehicles and equipment
- Ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner
Planning, Resources & Working in a Good Way
- Assist with operational planning and annual maintenance budgets
- Track expenses and manage supplies and contractor invoices
- Coordinate and oversee external contractors and service providers
- Provide regular reports to management on operations, staffing, and facility conditions
- Carry out all duties in alignment with the Nation’s values, traditions, and governance structures
- Work respectfully with Elders, leadership, staff, and community members
- Support community events and functions requiring operational or maintenance support
- Approach all work with care, accountability, and respect for people, place, and community
Lived and learned experience we are seeking
To be the successful candidate for this position, you will have/demonstrate:
- Education or equivalent: Certificate, diploma, or equivalent experience in facilities management, trades, construction, or a related field.
- Skills grounded in lived experience: Minimum 3–5 years experience in operations, maintenance, or facilities management.
- Supervisory or leadership experience required.
- Knowledge of building systems, grounds maintenance, and basic trades.
- Adaptability to remote community conditions and priorities.
- Cultural grounding: Knowledge of Pacheedaht First Nation culture, history and local traditions.
- Program leadership: Proven ability to plan, budget, manage finances, and design, deliver, and evaluate programs.
- Ability to manage multiple buildings and teams effectively.
- Understanding of health and safety requirements.
- People & relationships: Excellent communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills; skilled in problem solving and conflict resolution.
- Team supervision: Experience supervising and mentoring staff, with strengths in planning, organizing, and time management.
- Hands-on leadership style with strong interpersonal skills.
- Indigenous experience: Indigenous lived experience and/or significant experience working with Indigenous communities is strongly valued.
- Certifications & Checks: Valid BC driver’s licence (Class 5; Class 4 preferred) with a clear driver’s abstract.
- Trades certificate is considered an asset and will be favourably regarded in the selection process.
- Clear Criminal Record Check, including the vulnerable sector, as required.
