Live-In Mentor

Compensation: $2,025 per month, rent free apartment (2 Bedroom)

Independent Contractor, 1 year with option to extend.

Autumn House is a semi-independent housing program for youth 16 to 18 years old who are learning

to live on their own for the first time. Youth live in their own apartments and are supported during working hours by Archway staff. The live in Mentor offers afterhours and weekend crisis support.

Job Summary:

The Autumn House Live-In Mentor is an independent contractor providing support to resident youth,

after hours and on the weekends. The Live-In Mentor’s key responsibilities are to assess and triage situations that pose a potential safety risk for youth, role model good neighbour behaviour and act as a liaison between residents.

Responsibilities:

•         Uses a trauma informed and client centered lens when interacting with the Autumn House youth.

•         Triages potential emergency situations and advises youth on next steps or calls emergency responders as required.

•         Addresses conflict between youth residents after hours and on weekends.

•         Is a role model for good neighbour behaviour to youth including respectful communication and setting

appropriate boundaries.

•         Is a role model for tenant rights and responsibilities.

•         On behalf of the resident youth, liaises with the onsite caretaker to identify urgent repairs needed. As part of the support team for youth, communicates and collaborates with Autumn House staff.

•         Builds relationships with the youth and helps establish a culture of respect and support at Autumn House.

•         Must be available in person or via phone evenings and weekends.

•         Finds suitable coverage for the live-in mentor position when away from residence for longer than one consecutive night. Coverage must meet criteria.

•         Liaises with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) after hours and provides written documentation to Autumn House Staff and Supervisors.

•         Communicates with Autumn House After Hours Supervisor when incidents are occurring, when support is needed to navigate situations, to debrief incidents, provide updates, or when needing support of any kind.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification:

•         Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.

•         Valid Emergency First Aid with CPR level C.

•         Completed or working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care Social Work or a related field is an asset.

Experience:

•         At least one year experience working through a trauma-informed and client-centred lens.

•         Experience working with high-risk youth.

•         Experience working with high-risk youth in a residential setting is an asset.

 

Knowledge and Skill Set:

•         Strong written, verbal, and active listening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds. Strong English speaking skills are essential.

•         Relationship building skills; able to build rapport with youth with high-risk behaviours.

•         Strong crisis management skills; able to work effectively during crisis.

•         Excellent conflict resolution skills; able assist clients as they work through conflict.

•         Knowledge of trauma-informed and client-centered care.

•         Knowledge of substance use and mental health an asset.

•         Knowledge of youth culture and current trends an asset.

 

Terms and Conditions:

•         Must be available evenings and overnight (5:00 PM to 9:00 AM) and on weekends, but not required to be onsite for the whole duration. 

•         Rent-free 2-bedroom apartment provided in a new building. (Wi-Fi & Hydro not included.)

•         Pets to be approved by landlord and Autumn House staff.

•         Support and collaboration after hours and on weekends is available from the After-Hours Supervisor.  

•         Mentors can continue their work or education.

•         We are open to couples and roommates, sharing the contracted position.  All residents require a satisfactory criminal record check.

•         The Contractor will need WorkSafeBC Insurance.
