A Brief Overview

This position lays out each short story, essay, poem or other work to be published in the Queen's Quarterly (four issues per year); illustrates each piece with images supplied by the author or by selecting and/or creating suitable images and graphic designs; lays out the exterior and interior covers and tables of contents; designs promotional materials for the Queen's Quarterly; proofreads, fact-checks and copy-edits each piece; communicates with authors about suggested corrections and revisions; and will be involved in the creation of a digital version of the Queen's Quarterly as well as any related social media activity. We might also look to add mini-documentaries, podcasts and other mixed-media content to the digital version. The position will also belong to a collaborative and collegial team within Stauffer Library.

This position develops creative concepts using graphic design, editorial illustrations, and visual graphics in print and digital media to support the branding, marketing, communication, and/or course objects of the various stakeholders. This position ensures production control, including scheduling and prioritizing workloads.



What you will do

  • Develops creative concepts including graphic design, editorial illustrations, infographics, icons, imagery, templates, layouts, promotional materials, instructional strategies, and visual graphics in print and digital media to support the branding, marketing, communication, and/or artistic/course objectives.

  • Organizes production including scheduling and prioritizing workloads and maintaining project lists for the production team.

  • Develops, reviews, and updates brand guidelines and/or ensures content is in compliance with applicable guidelines and standards.

  • Maintains an archive of images, photos, videos, and previous work products.
  • Participates in the planning process related to materials development to ensure consistency in communication plans, design standards, and brand adherence across projects.

  • Identifies, secures, and creates branded materials for events, public relations, and brand-building programs.

  • Escalates potential legal issues arising from submissions to be published.

  • Undertakes research and communicates with contributing authors to factcheck information.

  • Communicates technical specifications to contributing authors and artists who provide either cover or article artwork.

  • Copyedits and proofreads submissions to be published.

  • Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.

Required Education

  • Three-year Community College Diploma or Three-Year Bachelor Degree, or equivalent. In addition, requires trade certification, qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.

    Required Experience

    • More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
      • Experience in graphic design and production with a familiarity of graphic/multi-media design tools and technologies considered an asset (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, ProTools, AfterEffects, etc.).

    Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
