Interim Strategy & Continuity Advisor

United Way Lethbridge & South Western Alberta

Contract (Approx. 10–12 weeks)

United Way Lethbridge & Southwestern Alberta is seeking an experienced nonprofit professional to support the organization during a leadership transition. This short-term contract will focus on strengthening governance systems, stabilizing operations, and preparing the organization for the recruitment of its next Executive Director. This role is designed to ensure organizational continuity while positioning the organization for long-term success.

Contract Overview

This is a temporary consulting engagement expected to run approximately 10–12 weeks (mid-March to June 2026).

The Advisor will work closely with the Board of Directors and current staff to support operational stability and ensure the organization is well prepared for the next permanent Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

Governance & Compliance Review

  • Review governance records and ensure corporate documentation is organized and complete
  • Verify key filings and documentation required under the Alberta Societies Act
  • Identify gaps in governance or compliance records and work with the Board to address them
  • Ensure alignment with United Way / Centraide reporting expectations

Operational Stabilization

  • Establish or improve centralized digital filing systems to support improved documentation and operational clarity
  • Create consistent document naming conventions and record management processes
  • Inventory organizational systems, software, and administrative access

Program & Financial Reporting

  • Develop a simple governance dashboard for Board-Administration continuity, outlining key operational indicators (cash position, programs, funding status)
  • Identify potential operational or financial risks
  • Support improved clarity around grant reporting and funding timelines

Staff & Organizational Support

  • Provide mentorship and task prioritization support for the Community Development Coordinator
  • Assist with clarifying operational responsibilities during the transition
  • Prepare documentation and transition materials for the incoming Executive Director

Board Communication

  • Provide periodic updates to the Board on progress and findings
  • Present key insights at scheduled Board and committee meetings

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an individual with experience in nonprofit leadership and governance. Experience supporting nonprofit organizations during leadership transitions, organizational restructuring, or governance stabilization is strongly preferred.

Strong candidates will demonstrate:

  • Experience in nonprofit governance or executive leadership
  • Familiarity with nonprofit compliance and board governance practices
  • Ability to quickly assess organizational systems and recommend improvements
  • Experience working collaboratively with boards and small staff teams
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Comfort working in short-term, project-based engagements

Experience with United Way organizations or similar community nonprofits is an asset.

  

Contract Details

  • Short-term consulting engagement (approx. 10–12 weeks)
  • Hybrid / flexible work arrangements possible
  • Some attendance at Board meetings will be required
  • The Advisor will be supported by the Board of Directors and will work collaboratively with current staff to implement the scope of work.

Compensation will be discussed with shortlisted candidates based on experience and scope of work.
