Job Title: Public Engagement Assistant (Student)

Location: Victoria, BC

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours/week, 15-week duration from April 27, 2026, to August 7, 2026. Please note this position will occasionally require work during evenings and weekends to support event schedules.

Salary: $21.63 per hour (Effective March 22, 2025) - Unionized Position, CUPE Local 410, Pay Grade 2

About Us:

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) is located on the traditional territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, today known as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. Established in 1951, the Gallery is housed in the historic 1889 Spencer mansion with accompanying contemporary exhibition spaces. The AGGV is the largest public art gallery on Vancouver Island, BC, with a collection of over 20,000 artworks representing the work of BC and Canadian artists as well as the one of the country’s most significant collections of Asian art. In our ongoing efforts to ensure the Gallery is welcoming and accessible, we offer regular Free Admission days, free admission for all Indigenous people, and for anyone 25 years of age and under.

About the Role:

The Public Engagement Assistant supports the AGGV’s Visitor Experience Department, educational outreach initiatives, and the AGGV’s largest community public engagement event, the Art Gallery Paint-In. This role involves assisting with project management, logistical coordination, and sharing pre-approved event information to ensure the success of the annual festival, which hosts 50,000 attendees.

Key Responsibilities:

•         Assist with event planning, scheduling, and logistics to ensure smooth operations

•         Support coordination of event materials, signage, and on-site needs

•         Maintain databases for participants, volunteers, and sponsors

•         Communicate pre-approved event details to artists, partners, and stakeholders

•         Distribute promotional materials and support accessibility initiatives

•         Help collect feedback, compile event reports, and suggest improvements

•         Provide general support to the Visitor Experience Department as needed

 

What We're Looking For:

•         Must be eligible for funding under the Young Canada Works program and registered under its terms.

•         Must be a current post-secondary student, returning to post-secondary school in September 2026. Enrolled in Arts, Art History, Education, Events Management, Cultural Management, or a related field.

•         Strong interest in arts, community engagement, and event planning

•         Excellent written and verbal communication skills

•         High level of attention to detail, organization, and teamwork

•         Experience with event planning or program coordination (preferred)

•         Proficiency in MS Office & Outlook; experience with Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams is an asset

•         Basic knowledge of survey research and data collection is a plus

•         Physical ability for light lifting (up to 40lbs) is an asset; all tasks will adhere to Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
