Position Summary: 

The Kitchen Manager provides leadership and operational oversight for a high-volume mission kitchen serving approximately 3,500 meals per day, while coordinating meal production and distribution to seven additional locations.

This role ensures that meals are prepared efficiently, safely, and with excellence while reflecting the mission, vision, and values of Hope Mission.

The Kitchen Manager develops sustainable kitchen systems, oversees staff and volunteers, manages food resources—including donated food—and ensures consistent, nutritious meals are provided to those we serve.

This position requires a mission-minded leader who is both strategic and hands-on, capable of building strong teams and stewarding resources with care.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Kitchen Operations
      • Oversee daily production of breakfast, lunch, and supper, as well as weekend brunch and supper services.
      • Coordinate meal preparation and packaging for seven additional program locations.
      • Develop efficient kitchen workflows to ensure timely, high-quality meal production.
      • Maintain proper food handling, sanitation, and safety standards in accordance with health regulations.
      • Ensure kitchen equipment and facilities are used safely and maintained properly.
    • Staff Leadership and Team Development
      • Supervise and support kitchen teams across shifts, typically consisting of:
        • Head Cook
        • Cook
        • Kitchen Helpers
        • Casual Staff
      • Recruit, train, and mentor staff to build a competent and self-sustaining team.
      • Foster a positive, respectful, and mission-focused work culture.
      • Equip team members to perform their roles effectively without requiring constant supervision.
      • Model servant leadership and provide coaching, feedback, and accountability.
    • Menu Planning and Food Stewardship
      • Develop nutritious, cost-effective menus that can adapt to large volumes and changing food donations.
      • Collaborate closely with the warehouse team to utilize donated food efficiently and responsibly.
      • Plan menus that maximize food donations while maintaining meal quality and nutrition.
      • Ensure responsible stewardship of food resources, minimizing waste.
    • Special Event Leadership
      • Provide operational leadership for major annual events including:
        • Spring Banquet
        • Christmas
        • Easter
        • Thanksgiving
      • Responsibilities include:
        • Menu planning
        • Large-scale food preparation
        • Volunteer coordination
        • Hands-on support during high-volume service events
    • Collaboration and Communication
      • Work collaboratively with:
        • Warehouse and food donation teams
        • Program leadership
        • Volunteers
        • Facilities and Maintenance teams
      • Communicate clearly with staff across multiple shifts
      • Support a coordinated approach to meal service across all locations

    Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

    Education and Experience

    • Red Seal Cook certification strongly preferred
    • Minimum 5+ years experience in commercial or institutional food service
    • Experience managing high-volume kitchens
    • Experience supervising staff and volunteers
    • A valid class 5 drivers licence

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to work in a commercial kitchen environment
    • Standing for extended periods

    Other Requirements:

    • Being a Christian Organization we require our employees to be in agreement and sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.

    • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
    • Able to provide Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and a Child Intervention Record Check
    • A letter of reference from a ministry or church is an asset
