Edmonton’s Food Bank is hiring a Director of Programs and Community Enhancement to lead food security initiatives and community partnerships that drive lasting change. Reporting to the Executive Director, this senior leadership role shapes programs that address the root causes of hunger and support long‑term self‑sufficiency.

 

About us

The Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as Beyond Food, collective kitchens, community gardens, the Pantry, and other food security enhancement programs.

 

The Director ensures all programs are coordinated, impactful, and aligned with Edmonton’s Food Bank mission, values, and strategic priorities.  The Director is also responsible for advancing the work and mission of the Edmonton’s Food Bank, maintaining a deep awareness of its purpose and ensuring that all decisions and actions are guided by and consistent with the mission and values of the organization.

 

Program Development and Management

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of food security and community enhancement programs.
  • Oversee Beyond Food initiatives, including workshops, the Beyond Food Lab, and strategic partnerships with agencies that help clients build skills and achieve greater self-sufficiency through job readiness, training, literacy, ESL programs, etc.
  • Guide, develop, and support Pantry operations, including intake and referrals, collective kitchens, the Seed Bank, and community garden programs.
  • Monitor program outcomes, evaluate impact, and ensure continuous improvement.

 

Community Partnerships & Engagement

  • Develop and maintain strong, strategic, relationships with partner agencies that support clients in building skills to achieve greater self-sufficiency.
  • Collaborate with external organizations to enhance program reach and effectiveness.
  • Ensure clear and effective communication with partners regarding program initiatives and outcomes. This will include internal stakeholders such as Resource Development for grant proposals and funding initiatives.

 

Leadership and Team Development

  • Supervise and mentor program staff and volunteers, providing performance management and professional development.
  • Promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation across teams.
  • Support cross-department initiatives that enhance community impact and organizational effectiveness.
  • Oversee volunteer engagement within the Program and Community Enhancement functions.

 

Administrative Support

  • Contribute to the development of the program enhancement budget and monitor related expenses.
  • Support the Executive Director and senior management team on projects and initiatives as needed to support the work and mission of the Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Education

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in Social Services, Community Development, Public Health, or related fields. Relevant work experience will also be accepted.

 

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in program development, management, and evaluation, community engagement, or social services.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and volunteers in program delivery.
  • Knowledge of food security issues and community-based program models.
  • Experience developing partnerships with agencies, community organizations, or external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with program evaluation, reporting, and data collection practices.

 

Core Competencies

  • At least 5 years of program and people management experience.
  • Strategic and problem-solving mindset, including the ability to identify and manage risks to the organization.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Program and people management skills with the ability to coach and mentor staff.
  • Ability to represent the organization to external stakeholders, including public speaking.
  • Willingness to step in and perform staff-level work when required, ensuring operations continue smoothly during staff shortages or high-demand periods across all departments.
  • Passion for the vision and mission of the Edmonton’s Food Bank.
  • Recognition that the role requires flexibility in duties and schedules.
  • Ability to innovate and be proactive without operating outside of organizational priorities.
  • Strong team and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to engage volunteers effectively in program areas.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a changing environment.
  • Strong ability to prioritize workload and manage competing demands.
