Edmonton’s Food Bank is hiring a Director of Support Services to provide strategic leadership for the Edmonton’s Food Bank’s client-facing programs. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this role ensures that community members receive timely, accurate, and high-quality services while maintaining strong, effective, relationships with agencies, depots, and partner organizations.

 

About us

The Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as Edmonton's Food Bank, was established in 1981. Today, the organization works with over 380 partner agencies in our city to provide food, meals,  service and support.

 

The mission of Edmonton’s Food Bank is to be stewards in the collection of surplus and donated food for effective distribution, free of charge, to people in need in our community while seeking solutions to the causes of hunger. 

 

What will you do?

The Director of Support Services oversees client services, reception in the main building, call center operations, and agency and depot engagement and communications. This position ensures that operational and programmatic support functions are aligned with organizational goals and client needs.

 

The Director is also responsible for advancing the work and mission of the Edmonton’s Food Bank, maintaining a deep awareness of its purpose and ensuring that all decisions and actions are guided by and consistent with the mission and values of the organization.

 

Client Services

  • Provide oversight for client-facing programs, including reception, walk-ins, call center, and home delivery programs.
  • Ensure client intake processes are efficient, welcoming, and meet the needs of a diverse community.
  • Support client surveys and service improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure client-facing staff and volunteers receive training and support to provide a high-quality service.

 

Agency and Depot Engagement

  • Oversees agency and depot relations, including communications, coordination, and reporting.
  • Works with the Agency/Depot Engagement Manager to evaluate needs of the community and research and develop new depot locations.
  • Provides oversight and guidance for collaborative and effective agency relationships with the Edmonton’s Food Bank.

 

Leadership and Team Development

  • Supervise the Client Services coordinator, Agency/Depot Engagement Manager, and support staff.
  • Mentor and coach staff and volunteers, providing timely feedback, performance management, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative, client-focused, and supportive work environment across all support service functions.
  • Oversee volunteer engagement within the client services function including the call center and walk in spaces.

 

Administrative Support

  • Contribute to the development of the support services budget and monitor related expenses.
  • Support the Executive Director and senior management team on projects and initiatives as needed to support the work and mission of the Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Strong agency and depot partnerships demonstrate measurable mutual benefit and advance the mission of Edmonton’s Food Bank, with programs remaining aligned to organizational priorities.

 

Education

  • Post secondary education in Business Administration or Social Services or relevant work experience.

 

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in customer service or administration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and volunteers in high-volume, client/customer facing programs.
  • Strong background in program evaluation, research, and service improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience in client databases.

 

Core Competencies

  • At least 5 years of program and people management experience.
  • Strategic and problem-solving mindset, including the ability to identify and manage risks to the organization.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Program and people management skills with the ability to coach and mentor staff.
  • Ability to represent the organization to external stakeholders, including public speaking.
  • Willingness to step in and perform staff-level work when required, ensuring operations continue smoothly during staff shortages or high-demand periods across all departments.
  • Passion for the vision and mission of the Edmonton’s Food Bank.
  • Recognition that the role requires flexibility in duties and schedules.
  • Ability to innovate and be proactive without operating outside of organizational priorities.
  • Strong team and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to engage volunteers effectively in program areas.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a changing environment.
  • Strong ability to prioritize workload and manage competing demands.
