🌟 About Skipping Stone
Skipping Stone connects Two-Spirit, trans, and gender diverse people with affirming and comprehensive support. We work from a belief that all trans people are worthy of dignity, respect, and care; and, that access to gender-affirming services is a right, not a privilege. Our team shows up with heart, rigour, and an unwavering commitment to liberation, especially for those navigating intersecting marginalizations.
We are a Calgary-based, trans-led nonprofit working across health, wellness, community, and advocacy. We prioritize sustainability, collective care, and alignment with decolonial and anti-oppressive practices.
🧠 About the Role
Legal and administrative systems are among the most consistent sources of harm for Two-Spirit, trans, and gender diverse people. Name changes delayed. Benefits denied. Custody hearings without culturally safe support. The Justice Navigator exists to change that.
This role provides guidance, presents pathways, and advocates and supports to Two-Spirit, trans and gender diverse individuals and lowers barriers to access for those navigating the justice system.
It does not provide legal advice and is not a replacement for registered professionals, but can make those connections and walk with clients through them.
The role has focus that is primary, but not exclusive, to the following systems for which there is the most significant need:
Family law (custody, guardianship, divorce, name and gender marker changes)
Immigration and refugee processes
Social benefits advocacy (income assistance, disability benefits, pensions)
🔍 Responsibilities
Support clients through legal and administrative processes related to family law, immigration, and social benefits
Assist with preparation for legal appointments, hearings, and documentation; attend court when appropriate
Offer grounding and support to reduce retraumatization and barriers to access
Support clients with name and gender marker change paperwork, including at Skipping Stone's Trans ID Clinics
Coordinate warm referrals to affirming legal professionals and community resources
Deliver community workshops
Build and maintain referral relationships with affirming lawyers, legal clinics, pro bono programs, and service providers across Alberta
🙌 You Might Be a Great Fit If You:
Have lived experience as a queer, Two-Spirit, trans, or gender diverse person
Have solid knowledge of family law, immigration, or social benefits systems (we value academic, professional and lived experience navigating these systems equally)
Have experience in systems navigation, advocacy, case management, or community support work
Have a strong grounding in trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally agile practices
Can translate complex systems into clear, accessible language, and facilitate spaces with warmth and care
Are self-motivated and excited to help build this role collaboratively from the ground up
Have demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the TRC's Calls to Action
Have (or are willing to obtain) a criminal record clearance, child welfare intervention check, basic First Aid, and Commissioner of Oaths certification
🌱 What We Offer
Salary: $53,000/year
Comprehensive benefits including health/dental/mental health coverage
Generous vacation and leave policies
Flexible scheduling
Deeply values-aligned, trans-affirming, and justice-centered team culture
Full support for professional licensing, insurance, and growth — so you can focus on care, not costs.
⚖ A Note on Pay & Equity
We are committed to transparent and equitable compensation. This role falls in our C2 band, which includes all frontline and direct service providing roles. Our pay structure was developed using third-party salary benchmarks, the living wage, compression limits, and a decolonial equity audit.
We especially encourage applications from Two-Spirit people, trans and gender diverse individuals, BIPOC, disabled folks, and those with lived experience navigating gender-affirming care systems.
How to Apply
Please send your CV and letter sharing your interest, approach to care, and any practice frameworks that guide your work to Juliet Burgess, Integrated Care Lead at .
If you’re unsure whether you meet all the qualifications, we still encourage you to apply as we value potential, commitment, and alignment with our values as much as credentials.
Applications End: April 24, 2026
