The North Grove (www.thenorthgrove.ca) is a dynamic community hub, situated in the diverse community of Dartmouth North. We offer services, programs, and space for people to learn and connect through family support, food, and friendship. We also partner with more than 25 organizations to help improve health, reduce social isolation and strengthen connections in this community.

The North Grove team is made up of 32 staff. We work with a dedicated Board of Directors, and more than 170 community volunteers. Collaboration, creativity, and community-centered decision making are important to us.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Communications Specialist to join our team. The Communications Specialist is The North Grove’s storyteller and connector, responsible for sharing the heart of our work with the community and amplifying the impact of our programs.

The North Grove’s work is rooted in relationships, and storytelling is at the heart of how we connect people to our mission. The Communications Specialist plays a key role in helping our community, funders, and partners see and feel the value of what we do every day. By capturing real stories, managing digital platforms, and promoting our programs and initiatives, this role strengthens engagement, supports fundraising success, and grows awareness of The North Grove as a trusted, inclusive community hub.

This role develops and delivers thoughtful, engaging communication strategies that build awareness, foster connection, and inspire participation and support. Working collaboratively across the organization, the Communications Specialist ensures that The North Grove’s message is clear, consistent, and grounded in the lived experiences of our community.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as required. Following an onboarding period, there is the opportunity to work remotely up to two days per week.

Reporting structure: The Communications Specialist will report to Director, Development and Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Communications: Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies and campaigns for key audiences, including team members, community members, volunteers, partners, and funders.

Content Creation: Manage and create content for social media, the organization’s website, and online donation platforms, ensuring a consistent and engaging voice across all channels.

Storytelling and Impact: Collaborate with program team members to identify and interview participants; craft authentic stories that highlight The North Grove’s impact and promote community programs.

Fund Development Support: Partner with the Director of Development & Communications to plan and execute communications for fundraising campaigns, events, and donor engagement initiatives.

Newsletter and Email Marketing: Grow and engage the electronic newsletter audience, managing content through Mailchimp and customizing communications for key audiences.

Media Relations: Serve as the primary contact for media inquiries, cultivating positive relationships and identifying opportunities to share organizational news and successes.

Brand Stewardship: Champion The North Grove brand by promoting consistent use of brand guidelines, reviewing and supporting materials created by team members, and modeling excellence in all design and storytelling.

Design and Visual Communication: Create visually engaging materials such as social media graphics, reports, and event posters using Canva or InDesign.

Partnership Coordination: Act as a liaison with key partners including photographers, videographers, printers, and other creative collaborators to ensure high-quality, mission-aligned storytelling.

Community Engagement: Participate in organizational events, tours, and storytelling opportunities that deepen connections with program participants, volunteers, and donors.

Internal Collaboration: Work with team members to ensure communications are timely, accurate, and aligned with program and organizational goals.

What you will bring:

● Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a related field - or equivalent combination of education and experience.

● Proven experience creating and executing multi-platform communications strategies in a nonprofit, community, or social-impact setting. Experience working with media is an asset.

● Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to craft messages that are clear, engaging, and accessible to diverse audiences.

● Strong visual communication and design skills; proficiency in Canva and/or Adobe InDesign required.

● Experience managing social media accounts, ideally using Hootsuite or similar tools.

● Proficiency in maintaining and updating websites (experience with Wix or similar content management systems is an asset).

● Familiarity with Mailchimp or other e-newsletter platforms.

● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

● A strong drive for personal and professional development and desire to learn.

● Warm, empathetic communicator who is comfortable working with diverse communities and stories.

● Curiosity and adaptability, with a willingness to learn and improve systems for greater impact.

● Strong problem-solving and relationship-building skills, with the ability to confidently navigate challenges in a constructive and collaborative manner.

● Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse, inclusive environment and demonstrate cultural humility and sensitivity in all interactions.

● A sense of fun and a commitment to kindness and empathy.

● Commitment to inclusive, strengths-based, and community-informed communication practices.

● Successful completion of a vulnerable sector check and criminal record check is required.

The North Grove is a caring and high-energy work environment. Staff wellbeing is prioritized, and we provide training opportunities, employer-paid medical/dental benefits from day one, 4% employer-paid RRSP contribution after probation, 4 weeks of paid vacation, all statutory holidays, paid sick time and 4 personal days. A computer is provided as well as a telephone for work.

Salary hiring range: $49,440 – $61,800 annually

The Selection Process:

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a short initial phone screening call to go over the basics of the position, get a high-level understanding of your experience, and answer any questions you may have.
