About Us

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has been serving Edmonton and area since 1907, dedicated to helping people and pets thrive, together. As a leader in animal welfare, we go beyond sheltering homeless animals — shaping a community that values the human-animal bond through advocacy, education and accessible support services.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of people and companion animals through sheltering animals in need, supporting pet guardians, engaging with our community and inspiring compassion. Guided by our values of compassion, trust, improvement, results, inclusivity and teamwork, we work toward a more humane and connected community for all.

The Role

The Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, internal controls, and overall financial operations. Working closely with the Director, Shared Services and the Finance team, this role supports strong financial stewardship, effective risk management, and long-term financial sustainability. The Controller also partners with leaders across the organization to guide financial planning, support policy development, and align financial practices with strategic and operational goals.

  • Oversee cash flow, forecasting, and investment management
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g., tax, CPP, EI, GST)
  • Lead annual audit processes and liaise with external auditors
  • Oversee capital asset management and inventory reconciliation
  • Provide backup support for payroll and accounts payable functions

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and support staff development
  • Implement cross-training to ensure operational continuity
  • Collaborate on departmental budgeting and workforce planning

Process Improvement & Systems

  • Identify and implement improvements in financial workflows and systems
  • Enhance efficiency through automation and process optimization
  • Strengthen internal controls and mitigate financial risks
  • Lead financial system enhancements and change management initiatives

  • Knowledge of federal/provincial legislation affecting charities and payroll.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems, spreadsheets, databases, and communication tools.
  • Knowledge of payroll and provincial legislation on Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety, and Human Rights

Skills & Abilities

The ideal candidate demonstrates ethical behavior and aligns with the organization's values, ensuring consistency in their actions and those of their team. They excel at building and maintaining positive relationships both internally and externally, fostering collaboration to achieve organizational goals. Strong communication skills allow them to convey ideas clearly and effectively. They are client-focused, proactively addressing the needs of internal and external stakeholders. A natural team player, they work cooperatively to set goals, resolve challenges, and enhance organizational effectiveness. As a leader, they inspire others to achieve the best outcomes, make informed decisions by assessing urgency and risks, and excel in organizing tasks to meet objectives.
