CASUAL OVERNIGHT SUPPORT WORKER – Wetaskiwin, AB

ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTED LIVING PROGRAM

At Serenity House, we support up to 6 adults with a mental health diagnosis who are further along in their recovery journey:  those who have demonstrated stability, sobriety, non-violence and non-aggression over the long term.  Our program is dedicated to helping them strengthen their life and social skills for them to be able to live independently in their community.

We are looking for a reliable and upbeat professional, who has a passion for working hands-on with these vulnerable adults to support them develop skills and positive life experiences through role modelling, in-the-moment teaching, and various activities.

Position overview: Working in a mentoring capacity and providing a consistent and supportive presence, you must have the capability and flexibility to respond to evolving priorities and demands such as:

•         Teaching life skills:  budgeting, meal planning, cooking, cleaning and managing a home, accessing community resources, leading a healthy, balanced life style, and assisting residents as necessary in their day-to-day tasks

•         Supporting residents to attend medical appointments or community events

•         Monitoring changes in mental health, and helping residents navigate through escalating situations

•         Administering medication as required

•         Documenting daily shift activities

•         General cleaning and program upkeep as required

The ideal candidate will possess:

•         Comfortable with adult mental health issues

•         Able to work independently and on a team

•         Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, customs and beliefs

•         Good understanding and acceptance of cultural differences and how they can impact treatment approaches

•         Good communication skills with proven organizational and documentation skills

•         Strong professional boundaries

Qualifications/Experience: Training/education in human services/mental health/community support work OR a minimum of 2yrs experience working with adults with mental health diagnosis. If education is in Social Work, must be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers.  First Aid for Mental Health and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Skills is an asset.

Other requirements: A clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (within 6-months); a valid Alberta driver’s licence (class 5); and driver's abstract (with less than 8 demerit points); and a reliable vehicle.

Pay Rate: $16.74/hour, plus 4% vacation pay.  We also offer free ongoing training and support for all of our employees.

Hours of Work: Sun-Thurs 4 p.m. to 6 a.m.; Fri-Sat 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. NOTE:11 p.m. to 6 a.m. are typical asleep hours.
