FULL-TIME TRANSITIONAL SUPPORT WORKER - Edmonton, AB

Unlimited Potential Community Services (UP) is a non-profit charitable organization with a long history of restoring stability and hope in the lives of children, youth, adults, and families in Alberta and help them achieve personal independence and family unity.

The Program: Our Supported Independent Living (SIL) program provides young adults with accommodation, support, and supervision to assist them in the transition to adulthood with the skills to thrive in the community.

The Transitional Support Worker (TSW) role is centred around a culturally-sensitive approach of teaching and enhancing independent living skills and fostering healthy life choices.  Collaborating with a strong and supportive team, TSW’s work on a rotational basis of primarily daytime weekday shifts, being on call two weeks out of ten.

Surrounded by strong organizational supports and a positive working environment, the TSW position provides a great introduction to community service work, and the opportunity to build experience in developing a person’s sense of independence, belonging, and connection to community.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish a nurturing, safe, and trusted environment for the individuals served;
  • Provide positive role modeling and mentorship in budgeting, cooking, transportation, and other life skills;
  • Support clients with decision-making, communication, conflict management, and the development of parenting skills;
  • Facilitate engagement and active participation in meetings, appointments, group social events;
  • Provide individualized one-on-one time focusing on relaxation and recreation.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Believes that everyone deserves the right to be treated with respect and dignity;
  • Has knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, customs and beliefs;
  • Approaches the care of youth and adults with health issues such as FASD, addiction, intergenerational trauma, mental health, suicidal tendencies, and other mental and behavioural challenges with empathy and professionalism;
  • Possesses a good understanding of cultural differences and how they impact treatment approaches for young adults;
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with proven organizational and documentation skills;
  • Works independently and on a team, handling stressful situations in a non-confrontational, problem solving manner.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Diploma/degree in Child Youth Care, Social Work or related field (if education is in Social Work, must be registered or prepared to register as a Social Worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers);
  • A Police Information Check (with vulnerable sector) and Child Intervention Record Check (both within the last 6 months);
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence, plus current driver's abstract (with less than 8 demerits);
  • Previous experience working with young adults and case management would be an asset.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary Range is $49,856.00 - $55,856.00 annually (salary commensurate with experience);
  • 3-weeks’ vacation accrual with an additional week added after 2 years;
  • 100% employer-paid health benefits package and RRSP contribution equal to 3% of gross salary.
