Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for an individual wanting to join the People & Culture team. Are you ready to be our Human Resources Student and make an impact in our community?

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Human Resources Student will support operational excellence by formalizing and centralizing core HR infrastructure. This role is responsible for documenting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across the employee lifecycle, auditing and organizing the agency’s job description repository on the organization’s intranet, and refining interview templates through collaboration with hiring managers. By aligning these tasks with HR best practices, this position ensures people processes are consistent, professional, and scalable.

This position is 9-week contract funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. In accordance with program requirements, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment. Candidates must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or individuals granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities

Human Resources Administration

  • Collate and review all existing job descriptions to ensure consistency in formatting, language, and core competencies.
  • Act as the primary administrator for the People & Culture department intranet repository, ensuring all job descriptions are accurately uploaded and categorized for agency-wide access.
  • Review and standardize guided interview templates populated by hiring managers to ensure they are objective and competency-based.
  • Ensure digital HR files and resources on the intranet are organized, up-to-date, and intuitive for end-users.
  • Manage and maintain sensitive and confidential materials like personnel matters, and organizational changes.

Process Mapping

  • Develop and document comprehensive SOPs for all stages of the employee lifecycle.
  • Analyze current HR workflows to identify gaps and translate them into clear, step-by-step process maps.

Other Support

  • File employee information and general correspondence.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary courses in Human Resources, Project Management, Business or other relevant field.
  • Previous work or volunteer experience in similar and/or relevant position is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty and Edmonton’s urban core and knowledge of relevant community and government resources is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Organizational and Project Management Skills: Has strong organization and process skills; meets deadlines; is able to prioritize a diverse workload and manage multiple projects at once; has keen attention to detail, accuracy and quality.
  • Communication Skills: An excellent communicator with strong written and verbal skills. Is an active listener and can effectively engage various audiences.
  • Digital Literacy: Understanding and proficiency with Microsoft applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook (email) and Outlook Calendar) and process mapping software (LucidChart).
  • Professionalism: Ability to portray a superior level of professionalism and adhere to a strict policy of confidentiality.
  • Sector Knowledge: Familiarity with issues of poverty, community-based organizations, and the services they provide.
  • Analytical and Decision-Making Skills: Strong conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to recognize as well as assess emerging issues and situations objectively, think creatively outside the box, and make sound decisions; is decisive and accountable.

Note: 30 hours per week, 9 week contract

Conditions of Work

  • Flexibility of the working day is inherent in the position. The workload fluctuates. Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Participation in organizational wide Community Safety Walks in the area of Bissell East and West, daily interactions with participants and community members served.

  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.

  • Police Information Check
  • Between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age (per funding requirements)
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or individual granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and must be legally authorized to work in Canada (per funding requirements)

  • Conflict into Calm Training
  • Drug Poisoning Prevention & Naloxone Training
  • Foundations in FASD
  • WHMIS
  • Other required training may be identified as required
