Our Community Planning and Development team works with residents, community organizations, institutions, policy makers, and others to address neighbourhood priorities and systemic issues and create more inclusive, equitable spaces.


The Position:


The Jane/Finch Centre is currently filling a position for Community Worker - Summer Project Assistant.


Accountability:


The position is accountable to the Manager of Community Planning and Development.


General Responsibilities:


The Community Worker will provide project coordination, administrative, and peer support to a variety of neighbourhood-based initiatives related to anti-displacement, climate change, employment, community spaces, and other local priorities. In this role, they will help with community outreach and engagement, research, event planning and delivery, as well as communications and documentation.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work with staff, resident leaders, grassroots groups, community organizations, and others to help organize, promote, facilitate, and document a range of engagement and research activities across Humber River-Black Creek, such as surveys, interviews, workshops, and community events
  • Contribute to the creation of project materials, like flyers, meeting notes, and summaries of community input
  • Support public outreach and promotions both in person and online
  • Attend engagement and research activities, assisting with setup/tear down, registration, evaluation, and documentation
  • Provide one-on-one support to local artists, community leaders, grassroots groups, and other partners
  • Actively participate in weekly check-ins, project/event planning meetings, and community networks
  • Perform other general tasks as required


Key Qualifications:

  • Current or former resident of the Jane-Finch community (or the larger Humber River-Black
  • Creek area) and/or experience living or working with other low-income, racialized communities
  • Career interest, education, and/or experience in the arts, design, urban planning, community development, and/or another relevant field
  • Committed to social justice, equity, and working with a strong anti-racism and anti-oppression framework
  • Comfortable talking with and engaging people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self-starter who has good organizational skills and is flexible to changing plans
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Some experience in research, graphic design, photography, or video production is an asset
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and some weekends, as needed
  • Ability to communicate in another language commonly spoken in the Jane-Finch community (e.g. Spanish, Vietnamese, Twi, or Arabic) is an asset

Other Job Requirements:


The position will also involve and require:

  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather (e.g. heat, sun, rain, and wind)
  • Repetitive tasks, such as bending, crouching, and reaching
  • Walking, standing, and working on your feet
  • Lifting heavy objects (up to 30 lbs), like wood furniture, tables, tents, etc.


*This position has been funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
