About Africa Centre

Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta (CAAC), operating as Africa Centre, is the largest pan African non-profit organization in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community. The key responsibilities of this 8 week position include supervising Summer Program Counsellors, ordering supplies, coordinating schedules, and completing all necessary reports:

  • Facilitate pre-planning and prep work regarding camp, including but not limited to planning structure of the day, recruitment/enrollment of students, processing applications, planning excursions etc. – 27%
  • Participating in the delivery of all programs and completing documentation/reporting as required – 50%
  • Helping to maintain housekeeping standards by ensuring all program facilities are left clean before the commencement of the program and after each activity and each meal – 5%
  • Submitting invoices and expense claims for expenditures - 2%
  • Ensure all paperwork is kept accurate, including but not limited to transportation, attendance, class rosters, contact list for all staff, etc. – 5%
  • Maintain a current and accurate record of all children enrolled in the Summer Camp or on the wait list – 5%
  • Contact parents if the student is not showing up for the program – 1%
  • Liaise with the Youth Program Manager to handle discipline and other issues – 5%

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Candidate must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations. International students are not eligible.
  • Candidates must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment.
  • Security Clearance Check and Child & Youth Intervention Check are mandatory requirements.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with children and youth ages 4-11 years
  • Enthusiasm and ability to work with youth from a variety of backgrounds in a group setting
  • Demonstrate knowledge of practices, procedures, activities, and programs as they relate to youth/children
  • Communicate clearly in English, both orally and in writing (to support academic tutoring); Knowledge of French and/or other African languages is an asset
  • Ability to manage time effectively and be results-oriented
  • Capable of performing independently as well as in a team environment

Education

  • Candidates must have completed at least their 2nd year of full-time post-secondary studies
