Program Description – Hope Health

Hope Health delivers a variety of health services to clients utilizing Hope Mission’s shelter services. The Rapid Response Team provides frontline emergency medical care within and around Hope Mission’s shelter sites, working alongside nursing staff, recovery coaches, and community partners to serve individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and complex medical needs. EMR/MFR team members work in high-acuity environments and play a critical role in connecting clients to appropriate care and keeping shelter spaces safe.

Position Summary

The Emergency Medical Responder or Medical First Responder (EMR/MFR) is responsible for responding to medical emergencies and providing urgent medical care throughout downtown Edmonton. This position serves vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, and complex medical needs, while supporting Hope Mission’s commitment to compassionate care and community safety.

You will work closely with outreach teams, shelters, healthcare providers, and emergency services to assess, treat, and coordinate care for clients in crisis. The role includes frontline emergency response, patient advocacy, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team operating in high-acuity and fast-paced environments. You will work alongside two Primary Care Paramedics and a health advocate.

Key Responsibilities

Emergency Response & Clinical Care

  • Attend and respond to medical emergencies within the shelter and surrounding property.
  • Respond to high-acuity or emergent wellness checks.
  • Provide high-quality care within your full scope of practice, following AHS EMS protocols or Hope Mission established protocols.
  • Make timely transport decisions (within 15 minutes of patient contact) and coordinate with emergency agencies.
  • Deliver trauma-informed de-escalation and provide emotional and spiritual support during crises.

Operational & Supply Readiness

  • Maintain emergency supply readiness, restock kits, and ensure secure clinical spaces.

Team & Program Contribution

  • Contribute to staff education (e.g., Naloxone training) and policy/procedure development.
  • Provide feedback on emergency response policies and engage in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the recovery coach to assist in referrals for frequent clients.
  • Support orientation and onboarding of new staff, modeling accountability and care in all interactions.
  • Participate in spiritual care activities and uphold the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.

Documentation & Administration

  • Complete all required documentation, including charting, referrals, and scanning/uploading records.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate with clarity, professionalism, and respect with staff, guests, and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in team meetings, organizational events, and training as required.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials

  • Completion of an accredited Emergency Medical Responder or Medical First Responder program.
  • Current licensure with the Alberta College of Paramedics (required for EMRs).
  • Current individual professional liability insurance (as per ACP licence, EMR only).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication skills when working with Hope Mission staff and interagency partners.
  • Solid knowledge of EMR/MFR skills and scope of practice.
  • Effective time management and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions

  • Casual position; shifts applied for through scheduling software on an as-needed basis.
  • Day shifts run 0500–1700; night shifts run 1700–0500.
  • Must adhere to Hope Mission’s casual requirements policy.

Other Requirements

  • As a Christian organization, Hope Mission requires employees to sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Able to provide a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and a Child Intervention Record Check.
  • Adherence to Hope Mission’s policies and procedures.
