We currently have a vacancy for a full-time Director of Finance. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance provides effective management of the financial requirements of the Agency. This includes all aspects of financial planning, accounting and reporting, payroll, risk management, management and control using a continuous quality improvement and best practice approach to reviewing and improving financial management functions. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, participates in planning and decision-making for the Agency.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the budget and financial planning process, meeting all deadlines for review and approval
• Monitor, analyze and report on the current financial situations of the Agency
• Streamline financial reporting processes, ensure deadlines are met, including statements and funder and government reporting requirements
• Review and further develop internal controls to improve efficiency and effectiveness and to minimize risk
• Coordinate year-end audit. Ensure that all working papers are prepared in advance of the audit. Work collaboratively with auditors.
• Prepare the financial portion of grant applications, proposals and other Agency business documents
• Manage Agency finances to ensure cash requirements are met
• Arrange adequate lines of credit, invests surplus cash according to Agency objectives
• Tracks changes in accounting standards and implements changes and procedures for the Agency
• Recruit, train and manage employees including performance management, performance appraisals, and skills development
• Monitor work distribution and ensure that direct reports are meeting the expectations of their positions
• Work collaboratively with direct reports to identify and implement professional development activities which support individual and organizational objectives
• Review processes continuously to ensure efficiency
• Ensure segregation of duties to minimize risk and maximize results
• As a member of the senior leadership team, work collaboratively with Senior Leadership Team members in decision-making and setting of organizational goals and objectives
• Contribute to the development and achievement of the organization’s strategic plan
• Ensure that financial and administrative operations incorporate strategic planning directions as well as organizational goals and objectives
• Support non-financial Managers and Directors in understanding, monitoring and explaining their budgets
• Act as the staff lead for Finance in the Resource Planning Committee (RPC), a committee of the Board of Directors
• Collect and analyze statistical information and prepare reports for organizational decision-making
• Contribute to Agency projects and support Board/Management decisions and strategies
• Conduct all activities within the Agency standards and policies and required legislation
• Other duties as assigned for program or Agency
Skills and Qualifications
• Professional accounting designation (CA, CMA or CGA)
• Business degree from a recognized University
• 1O years financial management experience including with progressive responsibility for the overall administrative affairs of a not-for profit organization with an annual budget of $5,000,000+
• Knowledge of not-for-profit fund accounting and legislation governing registered charities
• Membership in good standing within a recognized governing body
• Excellent financial analysis and reporting skills
• Demonstrated experience in developing strong internal control processes
• Demonstrated experience in developing solid financial and administrative systems, policies and procedures
• Strong computer and technology knowledge including networks, PC hardware, software and telecommunication
• Good communication and interpersonal skills including ability to work effectively with non-financial managers
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Strong computer skills including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Accounting Software
• Demonstrate efforts for continuous learning and development
