Employment Type: Casual

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week

About Hope Mission

Hope Mission is a Christian non-profit social care agency that has been serving vulnerable people in Alberta since 1929. We are one of Alberta’s largest social service agencies and currently operate emergency shelters, addiction recovery programs, youth programs, community outreach services, housing programs, and health programs (delivered through our HopeHealth division) across Edmonton, Red Deer, Wetaskiwin, and beyond. Position Summary

The Janitorial Worker is responsible for the sanitation and cleanliness of Hope Mission buildings and surrounding areas. Using appropriate chemicals, tools, and machines, this role maintains a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for staff, guests, and community members on a set schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Implement custodial procedures and systems as assigned.
  • Sweep, vacuum, and mop floors and stairways.
  • Gather and dispose of rubbish and waste materials.
  • Complete assigned cleaning tasks in a timely fashion and to established standards.

Facility Support

  • Assist facility management staff with tasks required within the scope of the department.
  • Arrange and rearrange tables and chairs for special events and functions.
  • Participate in special events and support set-up and tear-down as needed.
  • Perform sidewalk and parking lot cleaning, snow removal, and landscaping operations.

Safety & Equipment

  • Care for and maintain assigned janitorial equipment in good working condition.
  • Assist in keeping all areas free of potential hazards.
  • Assist in the maintenance of building security.
  • Observe the appearance and condition of premises and equipment; report needed repairs, safety hazards, or conditions requiring outside vendor services to the supervisor.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Receive and follow up on requests for unscheduled tasks.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs (23 kg) or more.
  • Capable of standing and working for extended periods, indoors and outdoors.

  • Dependable, proactive, and self-motivated with a genuine concern for the wellbeing of others.
  • Respectful and professional when interacting with staff, guests, volunteers, and community members.

  • A belief that recovery is possible and that together we can end chronic homelessness.

Other Requirements

  • As a Christian organization, Hope Mission requires employees to sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Able to provide a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • A letter of reference from a ministry or church is an asset.
  • Adherence to Hope Mission’s policies and procedures.
