The Victoria Chinatown Museum Society (VCMS) is seeking an organized and community-oriented Museum Operations Coordinator (the Coordinator) for the Victoria Chinatown Museum (the Museum) located in Victoria, BC. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for Chinese Canadian history and cultural preservation.
This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an individual who values public engagement and sharing stories, history, and contributions of Chinese Canadians. The Coordinator will be committed to the success and growth of the Museum.
The Organization
In early 2020, The Victoria Chinatown Museum Society was formed to honor the history, culture and contributions of Chinese Canadians. In October 2024, the VCMS assumed responsibility for the Chinese Canadian Museum in Fan Tan Alley located in Victoria’s Chinatown, and renamed it the Victoria Chinatown Museum. The museum has attracted approximately 180,000 visitors since opening in 2022 and occupies approximately 1,500 square feet of space.
Position Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Director of the VCMS, the Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Museum and the volunteer staff.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Opening and closing the museum.
- Providing visitor services.
- Collaborating with the Associate Director on on-site events and activities, as required including museum tours when requested).
- Overseeing operations to ensure the health and safety of visitors and volunteers.
- Ensuring that the museum operations are staffed appropriately.
- Overseeing the Gift Shop operations, including managing sales and inventory.
- Ensuring museum supplies are replenished.
- Collaborating with the Associate Director to recruit volunteers.
- Leading, training and managing the schedule for the museum volunteers.
- Produces and submits statistical and financial reporting on the museum and its gift shop, to the Associate Director.
- Monitoring the email box and other inquiries, replying or forwarding to the appropriate resource, as appropriate.
- Supporting on-site marketing and communications initiatives, including updating signage and visitor information.
- Other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned by the Associate Director.

- Experience in customer service in a museum and non-profit environment is an asset.
- Experience leading and scheduling staff/volunteers, including setting up for events.
- Knowledge of administrative and financial services (i.e., recordkeeping/tracking).
- Experience of retail operations with Point-of-Sales Systems and cash donations.
- Working knowledge of the MS Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience with public speaking/delivering scripted tours.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Knowledge of Chinese Canadian history and that of Victoria’s Chinatown is an asset.
- Ability to communicate in Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages spoken by the community is an asset.
- Salary: Up to $54,600 per year (1 FTE, 35 hours/week, 5 days/week).
- Includes 2 weeks paid vacation in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act.
- 5 paid sick days, additional 3 unpaid sick days in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act.
- May require occasional evening and weekend work. Additional hours may be compensated through time off in lieu or in addition compensation, subject to prior approval.
- The position requires working on site when the museum is open, there may be opportunities for occasional remote work when operational requirements permit.
