About Greenpeace Canada

Greenpeace Canada is an independent, people-powered, science-based campaigning organization working toward a green and peaceful future in which the Earth can nurture life in all its diversity. In solidarity with communities, it challenges governments and corporations to end harmful practices and advance lasting solutions through scientific research and investigation, advocacy, public engagement, clean alternatives, and non-violent creative action, including peaceful civil disobedience.

To safeguard its independence, Greenpeace does not accept funding from governments, corporations, or political parties; its work is supported by individual donors, foundation grants, and partnerships that do not compromise its objectives or integrity. Greenpeace Canada recognizes Indigenous sovereignty, supports the Land Back movement and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and is committed to collaboration and consultation that respect Indigenous rights, Treaties, knowledge, and free, prior, and informed consent. It also strives to build a workplace enriched by the perspectives, needs, and lived experiences of Canada’s diverse communities, actively encouraging applications from racialized and other equity-seeking groups and recognizing lived experience, unpaid credentials, and education and professional experience gained outside Canada. Candidates who are inspired by the mission and campaigning approach are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every listed requirement.

The Mandate

The Director of Finance and Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for Greenpeace Canada’s financial health and organizational infrastructure, ensuring responsible stewardship of donor funds and alignment with its mission, values, and commitments to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a key member of the Directors Council and Senior Leadership Team, the Director leads the Finance, Information Technology, and Office Administration functions, setting priorities, strengthening team performance, and ensuring that policies, systems, and practices meet legislative requirements, internal standards, and organizational values. The Director oversees organization-wide budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting and analysis, cash flow, reserves and investments, procurement, internal controls, annual audits, and risk management, while providing clear financial insight to senior leadership, the Board, and Greenpeace International. The role also ensures secure and effective technology services and sound management of facilities, leases, insurance, and office operations; collaborates with People and Culture on workforce planning, compensation, benefits, and resource allocation; and contributes to strategic planning, financial recovery, governance, and international initiatives. Through transparent, values-aligned leadership, the Director supports informed decision-making, operational excellence, fiscal accountability, and Greenpeace Canada’s long-term sustainability.

Ideal Profile

The ideal candidate is a collaborative, purpose-driven finance leader with a recognized accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) and at least eight years of progressive experience, including three or more years in a leadership role. They bring deep expertise in financial management, reporting, budgeting, forecasting, analysis, risk and internal controls, combined with a strong understanding of Canadian non-profit and charitable compliance. Experience overseeing finance and operations in a complex, multi-departmental and donor-funded organization will be important, as will familiarity with fundraising models, technology and systems integration, procurement, investment management, and cross-functional change and project leadership.

The successful candidate will lead with integrity, sound judgment, accountability, and a strong commitment to Greenpeace Canada’s environmental, social justice, and advocacy mission. They will be a strategic and analytical thinker who can translate complex financial and operational information into clear, accessible insights for staff, senior leaders, donors, the Board, and external partners. A transparent and inclusive people leader, they will build cohesive, high-performing teams, foster collaboration across departments, and strengthen financial literacy through coaching and participatory planning. Strong communication skills, digital fluency, resilience, adaptability, and a demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement while safeguarding the organization’s sustainability and reputation are essential.

While the Committee acknowledges that no single individual will embody all the desired qualifications equally, it has established a set of criteria that clearly outlines the ideal candidate’s background, experience, and personal attributes. An equivalent combination of education, skills, professional experience, and lived experience will be considered.
