Position Summary

The Accountant collaborates closely with the management team and the Board of Directors. As a skilled financial professional dedicated to the organization's mission, you will offer guidance in achieving current and future objectives. The role involves strategic planning, year-end financial coordination, and providing guidance in investment management, alongside assessing and improving financial processes.

  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the financial matters in line with good practice, in accordance with Board policies and legal reporting requirements
  • Ensure monthly journal entries and account reconciliations are reviewed and ensure uploads from various departments are posted and are accurate
  • Ensure all financial activities and reporting, including fund accounting, are executed in an accurate and timely manner
  • Ensure that appropriate internal controls exist throughout the organization
  • Ensure both payroll service and benefit providers are compliant with contract terms
  • Preparation of cash flow analysis and forecasting on an ongoing basis
  • Preparation of financial monthly corporate narrative package, analyzing results and explaining material variances to management and the Board
  • Support the Executive Director and Operations Manager in developing an annual budget and support the presentation to the Board
  • Ensure that accounting for donations and construction spending on new centre development is correctly recorded
  • Provide sound investment management leadership to maximize the return on TWC’s reserved funds within the Board policy guidelines
  • Coordinate the compilation of the year-end draft financial statements, preparation of year-end audit lead sheets, liaising with the external auditor and responding to audit queries
  • Participate in the development of forecasting and modeling tools that enable TWC to measure success, opportunities, and risks, and to plan for the future
  • Participate in the development of strategic annual and long- term plans, incorporating financial planning in the process
  • Assess processes in order to identify and communicate process and/or control weaknesses
  • Assist with development, evaluation, implementation, and compliance of financial policies and procedures
  • Assess and provide recommendations to the Executive Director and the Board on evolving accounting standards and tax regulations
  • Provide support and guidance to other staff as required when requested

 

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, professional designation in good standing (CA, CMA or CGA)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in accounting or related
  • Knowledge and experience in end-to-end financial processes and controls preferred
  • Experience in working within the charity sector preferred
  • Experience and comfort working in a team environment

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and presentation) with focus on clear, concise messaging
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to influence with integrity across with organization and with external parties
  • Motivated self-starter, with ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing and dynamic work environment
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office and has an aptitude for learning new computer applications
  • A working knowledge of standard financial reporting guidelines, MIS Guidelines, GAAP (specifically not-for-profit accounting and PSAS), CRA regulations and guidelines
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
  • Process improvement mindset to identify and provide recommendations to enhance efficiencies, effectiveness and cost savings

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires the ability to spend extended periods using a computer keyboard
  • Requires extended periods of sitting

Working Conditions: 

  • Fast-paced office/hospital environment, with noise and the possibility of frequent interruptions
  • This position requires working near materials and animals that may trigger allergic reactions
